No spring to close damper, damper can stick open

Note that this damper does not have a small spring to close the damper. Fantech make another separate damper – the RSK series – which does have a spring. I called both SupplyHouse and Fantech technical support, and the DGD isn't meant to have a spring, it relies on gravity to close. This works OK if the damper only opens a little before being allowed to close, but if the halves of the damper are raised too far they stick open. Both dampers raised to a 30 degree angle seems to do it. I've no idea how far our fan will open the damper in practice, and don't want to have to disassemble everything if it does in fact get stuck. Both this DGD and RSK are designed for a vertical mounting close to the exhaust point, so I don't fully understand why one design would need a spring and the other not. Fantech support did recommend using the GSK for my bathroom exhaust situation, for what it's worth.

Forget the damper function

Bought this and installed it vertical. The damper flaps move up when the fan is on and don't fall back down. Don't buy it if you need a functional damper. 2 stars because everything else about it is as expected.

DGD not for exhaust to soffit

DGD damper will close if mounted horizontally, so will not open when exhaust blowing out. This unit ONLY for intake from grille, not exhaust

Good for vertical. Add spring for horiz.

We love the grille and we installed it and the backdraft damper in a thru the wall fan application. We found the backdraft damper needed a spring for horizontal use. So we bought another damper and transferred the spring. All in all I was satisfied with the support provided by SupplyHouse.com and I strongly recommend them.

ASK A QUESTION

Q: Can this be used as an exterior exhaust grill to the Fantech? It would be a dirrect vent for a bathroom exhaust to the outside wall. Any other suggestions? Thanks. Dave

Dave.. That is designed for indoor use only. It will degrade quickly outside. Go to your local home store and get a standard dryer vent outlet. It'll work just fine. You'll likely need a 4X3 adaptor too, depending on which model you are installing. Erik Klaproth

Dave, No, the damper goes the wrong way. A dryer vent would work because it let's air out but prevents a back draft. Sent from my iPhone
