This is generally a single pole single throw device that opens on low or high temperature depending on the model, commonly used for refrigeration temperature control but has been used depending on the model to control heating and air conditioning systems as well. This device should only be installed by a well trained professional HVACR technician. It must have wires connected properly to it from the system which it is controlling. To put it plainly it is not much different than s common light switch in a typical home however rather than a human being flicking the switch off/on, the device uses a gas stored within a bulb/capillary tube that responds to temperature change and thus expands and contracts , thus making or breaking a set of electrical contacts internally in order to make or break a power source from one wire to another.
