So far I'm liking it...we'll see how it holds up

Purchased the 129k BTU Combi for my home to replace a 38 year old Laars cast iron boiler and a tank HW heater that was going on 12 years old. I completed the installation about 6 months ago and so far its been absolutely perfect. Its been running the whole 6 months for hot water and as of the last month has now also been heating my house. As far as domestic hot water goes, I literally can't tell any difference between this and my previous tank unit. I get hot water at the tap just as fast. Using it in combi mode has also been great, it switches very fast between modes and those settings can all be adjusted in the menu, although I haven't changed any of the default settings other than the outside air temperature reset (OAT), which brings me to my favorite feature of this unit...it includes an OAT sensor. I setup my own reset curve and I've got it to the point now that it runs for extended periods of time without cycling. My house is about 2k square feet with 4 zones and there is no doubt that the 129k BTU is oversized, probably by at least 25%, but short cycling is still kept to a minimum thanks to the reset and impressive turndown of this unit. I'm not far enough into the winter yet to tell how much of a difference this made with my gas bill, but time will tell. I'm just hoping it holds up well.

Great combi unit. 10-1 turndown, no hot water "sandwich"

10-1 turndown means this boiler has one of the lowest firing rates of any boiler out there. Making it both large enough for domestic hot water and small enough for central heating. I like the mini tank for the DHW side as it is much less likely to scale up, has a lower pressure loss than a flat plate heat exchanger, and most importantly does not take extra time to get hot water at the tap and does so without the hot water sandwich. The hot water sandwich is when you turn on the hot water at the tap and it runs cold for a bit, then hot from the residual heat in the heat exchanger, then cold again as the residual heat is used up, then hot again as the unit takes a bit to fire up. Very annoying and often requires education to the customer and then they have to educate their guests which is ridiculous. Without the mini tank I would use an indirect tank which would greatly add to the cost and take up a lot of space. With all the electronics controlling the unit I like to include a surge protector to help protect the unit's control board. I also like to have a spare igniter and mixing valves on hand. On any combi those are the most likely to go bad first. Soft water will help keep the mixing valves in good shape. The cabinet model (this unit) is great for saving space, but I also like the floor model for including primary/secondary piping within the boiler itself. Great time saver. I hope laars continues to refine this boiler and keeps producing them as a fire tube with mini indirect tank. I have one customer in the field with the older version and they love theirs too.

Replacing a Quiteside, which gave us problems from day one

I am very happy with this boiler. Our old boiler died, and this one runs perfectly. Water is steadily warm during showers, and all 4 of us can take showers one after another without running out of hot water. I am assuming in winter this unit will save a lot of energy, as it's 95% efficient. Happy with Supply House's price and shipping, too.

Great little boilers

I am an installing contractor. I have put in around 15 of these new generation Laars boilers. I have been installing Laars for about 4 years. They seem to be pretty reliable so far. I have had a couple issues, all of which have been resolved. The insides are made of durable stainless steel and thick plastic pieces. Overall they are nice boilers, lightweight, and easy to install. A couple complaints: The manifold comes out 1.5", it costs extra money in fittings to pipe in. The interface to set the parameters etc. is a little hard to navigate. I do like the access panels they've added for service. Also they are a true sealed combustion unit, not a sealed cabinet. The analog gage on the front is a great touch as well.

Q: What is the approved exhaust piping material for this equipment? Is it polypropylene or B vent. I'm replacing an existing LAARS Endurance combination boiler.

Hi Mike. According to the installation instructions, the FT is a Category IV appliance and may be installed with PVC, CPVC or polypropylene that complies with ULC-S636, ANSI/ASTM D1785 F441 (see Table 3) or a stainless steel venting system that complies with UL 1738 Standard and ULC S636.
