I have been using toilet gel for many years now. I would not use it in the tank if you are planning on reusing the tank because it will clog the jets. I use it when I replace A

Prevents spillage
Great for replacement jobs. Prevents possible spillage while carrying old bowl through house for disposal. Good for customer relations. I've also thrown some in the tank as needed.
