Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. Yes, it can be used either flush up against the wall or to join the seam in the middle of two pieces - it is open on both ends. It is 4" wide. Attached is a picture showing the width and height. It should fit a standard baseboard radiator.
Wall trim means it connects 2 covers or acts as an extension. You use the end pieces on the end of a heater run not as splice. You show a splice and its width so I don't understand the customer is confused.
