Good quality, cost effective
First, as others have mentioned, filter sizes are "nominal" and vary from brand to brand. This one is towards the large size. In my case, it was going in an electrostatic filter housing that had been stripped. A previous filter was in there that fit. This one didn't until I removed the rails that used to hold the electrostatic elements. Not big deal. It is a snugger fit.
Second it does have foam strips top and bottom. That can present a size problem in some cases. But it also insures less leakage around the filter. Again, for my purposes I'm glad they are there.
Third, there is a range of filter grades. They involve how fine a particle can pass through the filter, and can be counter intuitive. The filter I took out was MERV 13 or higher. Yes, it could catch finer particles, but the major difference is that it restricts airflow more and clogs more quickly. I got MERV 8 and would not consider a higher value for my application.
If you really want to know how the filter is doing, get an inexpensive digital manometer and a couple of static pressure sensors. The whole thing will set you back about $50. Put one sensor on each side of the filter (facing directly into the airflow) and measure the static pressure difference. An entire heating system is supposed to have a static pressure of 0.5 in Hg or less (although mine will work up to 1 in). The filter should be a relatively small part of that. I believe this one claimed to be 0.05 in Hg at 300 fpm when new. When the static pressure difference across the filter starts to dominate, its time for a change.

damaged and not protected
I purchased 2 large filters which were delivered quickly but severely damaged. I hate returning items and was able to mostly pull the damaged areas into a useable shape, but I will not be buying from supply house again. The filters barely fit in the box, which left no room for any protection. The shipping box was damaged, but I could not determine if all the damage (to both filters) was just from the shipper.

I literally received this huge furnace filter the next day...as always. The box was damaged during shipping and so two of the corners were caved in on the filters rendering it unusable. I immediately called Supply House and they requested I send a photo or two. They said I was good to go and I received a new filter the very next day! The female rep. on the phone was ultra friendly, professional, helpful and PATIENT and took the time to listen closely...even though I was technically challenged to send a photo via email...lol. I've utilized their company for furnace filters and even a furnace motor and have never been let down. "Old school" professionalism and pride like this is hard to come by. (As an aside; that rep. is a huge asset to the company. And I don't say that lightly.)

damaged and not protected
I purchased 2 large filters which were delivered quickly but severely damaged. I hate returning items and was able to mostly pull the damaged areas into a useable shape, but I will not be buying from supply house again. The filters barely fit in the box, which left no room for any protection. The shipping box was damaged, but I could not determine if all the damage (to both filters) was just from the shipper.

Hi, When there was a lot of construction in my neighbour I was changing my filters after 6 months. If your windows are often open and the blower turning 24 hours a day you could also change the filter after 6 months. The last time I changed the filter it was after 1 year and it was still not clogged.

It can be I would not use it longer then that. However the main thing that dictates when to change it is when it is dirty and that will vary do to the conditions as to where you live. If you filter looks dirty change it sooner your furnace and AC coil and wallet will thank you. Sent from my iPhone
