Verify manifold style

I replaced three faulty Wirsbo telestat style thermal valves with this Uphonor valve. This valve comes with the adapters to mount this valve to the various manifolds listed. As I was unsure what MANIFOLD style I had I called Uphonor customer service. The gentleman was extremely helpful and explained to me that if you have what is referred to as the "old style" Wirsbro manifold, it is identified as such by "Wirsbro" being CAST into the body of the manifold. To connect this valve to this style manifold, discard the three adapters included with the valve and utilize Uphonor VA33 spacer ring ONLY, available here at Supply House. In fairness, I should say that Supply House may have been able to advise me of this but I'm one to just call the manufacturer when able. Shipping time from Supply House was excellent. Valves have performed flawlessly since installation.

Pretty poor actuator -- they have two major problems

I have Wirsbo/Uponor radiant floor heat in my house, which originally had the MVA actuators (motorized, also called "Tele-stats") on a 3-zone manifold. They were wearing out after several years of use, so I ordered these new thermal ones for replacement. Like other reviewers here, I have found two major problems with them: 1) The plastic adapter collars are poorly made, so the actuator will easily come loose from the manifold. 2) They take about 6 minutes to open the valve after applying power, and about another 6 minutes to close the valve after removing power; which is causing major disruptions, especially with my garage heating loop. I spoke with a technical representative at Uponor headquarters in Minnesota in January 2018, and confirmed that all their motorized valve actuators are no longer made; and they plan to never manufacture them again. My recommendations: -- If you're lucky enough to be reading this before you buy Wirsbo/Uponor proprietary manifolds, DON'T DO IT! Buy/build a generic brass or copper manifold assembly, and plumb up separate Honeywell (or other motorized) zone valves such as the 4000 or V8043 series. (I have Honeywell motorized zone valves in other parts of my system, and have been very happy with them over many years.) -- If, like me, you already have a Wirsbo/Uponor proprietary manifold with the built-in valve plungers... plan to limp along with the new thermal actuators until you can dismantle the whole thing and re-plumb with a non-Uponor manifold and separate motorized zone valves as above, and buy the necessary fittings to match your existing PEX tubing. (You could also order one of the Honeywell MZV520-RP actuators, and see if it fits your Wirsbo/Uponor manifold -- I'm going to try that.)

Good alternative

The original actuator switches started popping off the manifold leaving the valve open constantly. I replaced them with this new model but also had to change to the spacer ring VA31H (per Uponor's tech support suggestion) in order to get the switch to stay on.

It Works! but watch that you power up device before trying

The actuator is shipped partially "released" such that if you install it your pump comes on and heat zone working - even if thermostat not calling for heat (and you might be worried) once its received 24V for 6 minutes its fully energized then goes back to off correctly... I worry about the plastic on these - the little tab that holds it on the ring- it seems to easy to pop off- and im replacing older model ones that did have the plastic tab break the holds it on to the ring above the manifold

The actuators are good but the adaptor rings are hard to fit

I have the old WIRSBO brass manifold. The actuators are to replace the old ones as attached photo. The adapter rings are not fit well.

Q: My A2870100 adaptor ring won't fit on wirsbo manifold (about 15 years old} Looks not to be deep enough. Trying to replace A3020522 motorized valve acuator with Upnor A3023522

When connecting to a Wirsbo manifold, ring A3019900 must be purchased in addition to the actuator. The included rings are for the current model manifolds.

No, the manifolds themselves should be installed upright.

you may need the correct adapter ring for the actuator/manifold

If you have an older Uponor TrueFlow manifold, you also need a brass adapter ring (A2630028). Nowhere is this mentioned in the descriptions.

Q: I bought 2 thermo-actuators to replace 2 motorized actuators. Only one of the "old" motorized actuators is bad. Can I use one motorized and one new thermo-actuator that are controlled by different thermostats? (same aquastat )

Yes. Mechanically they work the same. Ron

Ginger, Yes, you can mix zone valve and actuator types on the same circuit, as long as they are all 24V and you check to make sure the total power draw of all actuators, relays, etc. does not exceed what your transformer can supply. The heat-actuated valves will operate much more slowly than the motorized ones. Tom Wills

Q: We are going to replace our Wirsbo motorized actuators. Do we need to buy the spacer rings? It looks like there is already a spacer ring under the old actuators but we haven't taken anything apart yet.

Not sure what spacer rings you're referring to (perhaps wave washer?). But the ones I bought were complete. Just screw them on and hook up the wires. Good luck.

No. I didn't need to buy a spacer ring when I replaced my actuators. Sent from my iPhone

I use this to simply replace the old unit...use everything in the box. My system only requires two wires, so I only use two of the four wires in this unit. --rd

Q: A310522 Valve Question: Is there a way to RESET the Valve like it was from the box? The furnace had to be turned OFF at the main power box while the Valves had the Manifold OPEN and the pumps ON when the furnace Igniter malfunctioned. The Valves did not return the Manifold to the CLOSED position at that time. When power was reapplied, the Valves did NOT move – stayed where they were. I turned the power back off and removed the Valves to see if they would return to their OFF position to no avail. Are they jammed / broken?

There are 2 types of actuators. One with a metal knob to adjust the valve and one with a plastic top that can't be adjusted. If you have the one with the metal knob it has to be adjusted to the open position when it's energized. If you screw the metal knob all the way down the manifold valves won't close. Hope this helps.

Q: We presently have Wirsbo Motorized Valve Actuator Part #2052382 & are wondering if this part will work it its place.

Don@Adamanda’s, I am a home owner who does his own maintenance on our residential Wirsbo system. The motorized and thermal actuators from Wirsbo are generally interchangeable. Functionally they are similar with the thermal actuators being slower to open and close than the motorized version. In my experience the thermal actuators have been a longer-life part than the motorized actuators. (Our system is seventeen years old and I have replaced all of our actuators with thermal actuators.) Good luck!
