Works well after understanding operation

Like others here, I thought multiple units I received were defective. After a series of readings, I found a few items from the MFG manual "The actuator mechanism of the OEM-Actuator uses a PTC resistor heated elastic element and a compression spring. The wax element is heated by applying the operating voltage and moves the integrated piston. The force generated by the movement is transferred on the piston lifter and thus opens and closes the valve." -The "dead time" can be up to 3 min between the application of power and the actual opening of the valve, similar to the closing time, remove voltage and it takes quite a bit of time. "In its delivery condition, the OEM-Actuator is kept open when de-energised due to the First-Open function (filling). This enables heating operation during the carcass construction phase even when the electric wiring is not yet complete. During the later electrical start-up, the First-Open function is unlocked by applying the operating voltage for more than 6 minutes. The OEM-Actuator will then be completely operable."

Zone valve actuators

Easily installed on my Bluefin manifold. The only reason I didn't give it a 5 was that it was unclear to me about the wiring for these. Since these are only 2 wire actuators, I had a 50-50 shot at it. I guessed wrong and just needed to reverse the wires to enable the actuator. These interface nicely with the Sage Zone panel.

Lot of failures

I installed 10 of these actuators, replacing another brand that only lasted 1 year. I have already replaced 2 of the 10 in just over a year of service. I have not found a brand that is reliable yet.

Failure Rate is High

Have replaced 5 out of 20 valve actuators on one job. They get warm but don't retract.

Really Can't Say

I bought one of these to test on my Mr. Pex 10 loop manifold. I chose this one because it was a two wire which is what I need. It is connecting to a Tekmar 335 zone control so I don't need the end switch. Well It screwed on perfectly, I applied 24 volts and nothing happened. No movement, no noise, nothing. So I assumed it didn't work and returned it. Tech support wasn't much help but customer service was good, the return was easy. Now I don't know what to do, I need 10 of them but am skeptical.

Get a 4 wire instead...

Had I known about this earlier, I would have bought the part MP700 which is compatible with Rifeng manifolds, has 4 wires instead of 2, and is sensibly the same price.

I am not sure, but the MR Pex. actuators will work if you use an adapter ring.

Q: Could I wire two-tree actuators for single zone thermostat/controller? I cannot use zone valve, because I want to use 6 loop manifold for two zone, where each will have own thermostat.

Just parallel up each actuator ( Common + Hot>> or "c" + "w" ) for each loop you want controlled by the same thermostat. This way when zone 1 calls it heats up actuators say 1-3 or whatever loops on the manifold you want active at the same time. Don't forget the current draw for multiple actuators may over load some thermostats and may need a dry contact relay. Or use a Taco or Argo zone relay panel with 6 zone capacity, then jump the TT connections

No problem, these actuators are very low current draw. They will typically draw only 0.08 amps at 24 volts (2 watts),per actuator. The total number of actuators that may be used with a zone control will depend on the transformer VA rating of the zone control you are using. Add up the total amps of all actuators on your manifold and multiply this by 24 volts to get the VA of connected load for the actuators. If your total VA does not exceed 80% of the VA rating of the transformer for the zone control, you should have no problem using several actuators per thermostat for your control. The valve actuator you reference appears to be a two wire actuator so be certain that the zone control will allow for a time delay on actuator opening before turning on the boiler or pump. In some instances it can take several minutes for the valves to open and if a low mass boiler is firing it needs to circulate as soon as the burner comes on or overheating may occur. The alternate is an actuator with four wires two of which are for an "end switch" that completes the boiler ignition control circuit only once a valve is open and closes the "end switch".

Q: Can the MA-ACT be installed upside down?

The actuator would function in an upside down position, but we would not recommend this orientation because it can be unsafe to install electrical devices below water.

Yes, this operator may be installed in any position depending on how your manifold is set. Be wary of any fluid leaks as it is not fluid tolerant (you do want to keep them dry), so if you are making any repairs above these controls it may be best to remove them from the manifold and tie them out of the way if performing service or flushing or purging from a manifold at a higher elevation.

Yes, you can flip the supply and return up or down, inlet left or right. They are set up for the pex feeding down, but in a basement you are feeding up. The emblem will be upside down Sent from my iPhone

Q: I have an extra spot on my manifold for future expansion in a bonus room- what would I need besides this to put the bonus room on an individual thermostat?

You would need an actuator for each loop on the manifold, a thermostat for each zone, and a zone control.

I checked on the Reifeng actuators.  I see two wire 24 volt thermal actuators if this is what you are looking at.   I guess, first might be a question; are all your zone circuits "home run" to the same manifold?  If so, you will use three actuators for each zone all wired in parallel. Because these are two wire controls and have no "end switch" to tell the boiler and pump to turn on, they will need to be activated via a zone control box that receives the thermostat signal and then actuates relays to energize the actuators pump and boiler.  I might suggest you check on the TACO ZVC 406 zone valve control.  The manual and spec sheet provide instructions for two wire and four wire zone valve connections as well as expanding the control for up to 20 zones.  Since you have 7 zones perhaps a 4 zone and a 3 zone control will fill your needs. Current draw on the actuators is very low but it is best to check their data (not listed on this website) to see that the total VA load on the control transformer is not exceeded since they will be wired in parallel. 7 zones at 3 actuators each is 21 actuators.  The TACO zone valve control boxes for  3 and 4 zones are 40 VA each.  5 and 6 zone boxes are 80 VA each. The big question is what is the VA rating for the Reifeng actuators???? can any one answer this questions?

Taco 24 volt zone control. Depending on how many zones, you can order a Taco zone control box for as many zones as you need. As far as I know, you could install up to 3 actuators to one taco zone circuit. You could use either hydronic either/or radiant with the same Taco zone control box.

Mr. PEX actuators work great for single loop zones. For multiple loop zones, use Taco zone valves http://www.pexsupply.com/Taco-570-Zone-Valves-325000 or better yet, use a separate circulator for each zone. In my own house for radiant heat I have a mix of zone valves for the smaller multiple loop zones, separate circulators for the larger multiple loop zones, and then Mr. PEX actuators for the single loop zones that are fed from a Rifeng 7 loop manifold. I’m using the Uponor thermostats to control the zone valves and the Mr PEX actuators. They work GREAT!

Chester, Your actuators can easily be controlled with 1) Argo AZ-3 zone valve controller and 1) Argo AZ-5. Use the first for the 3 radiant zones, and the second for the four high temperature zones. Do you understand that you have described a 2 temperature system that will require some sort of temperature step-down for the radiant zones? best wishes, Randy the Hydronics Guy

Q: what is the benefit of a 4 wire over a 2 wire thermal actuator? what extra wiring will i need to do with a 2 wire actuator for it to function properly ?

Four-wire actuators have an end switch, which ensures that the circulator will not come on until the zone valve opens fully. Wiring is the same with either type of actuator. You'd just have more wires to connect to your control if you use a four-wire actuator.

You need to remove the white on/off caps atop the return manifold and replace them with the actuators.
