It's working. Shipped in closed position

My damper intermittently stopped opening after 20 years. My HVAC guy said the damper was "binding" and proposed replacing it and its actuator along with those for the zone that was still working. I asked if it could just be the actuator, but he claimed that those never fail. Skeptical, I decided to replace the actuator on my own since that was much cheaper, and a weak motor seemed more plausible than a binding damper after 20 years. As others have said, this part seems to be identical to the Honeywell/Trol-a-Temp Model MST (24V - 6W) I had. Incidentally I'm not convinced that this part is actually made by Honeywell despite its label. Mine came with a small Allen wrench (hex key) for removing the set screw that keeps the crank arm on the motor shaft, which was nice. The instruction sheet said the actuator would be shipped in the open position, but it also advised you to check for continuity between certain terminals to verify that. Good thing I did (using an ohmmeter) because it was actually in the closed position. I simply wired the new unit just like the old one, put it in the old plastic housing (box), and attached the motor crank arm. So far, so good. If it continues to work, I saved a bundle over what the HVAC guy proposed, which was lots of needless and expensive work.

Honeywell MSTN Damper Actuator Review

This product is used to open/close mechanical dampers in hvac duct work. The unit works very well except the wafer switches used to make/break the 24v control voltage fail over time requiring replacement of the entire motor/wafer switch assembly. The motors remain functional and would probably last 50+ years. The weakest link is the wafer switch.

This replaced a Trol A Temp MST damper motor and it works the same with same wires connected to same terminals even though it is model MSTN.

Satisfied Homeowner

I am a homeowner and bought the Honeywell Power Open/Power Close MSTN motor to replace one of two I bought last December. Shortly after I installed the first-floor damper motor it began to emit an audible hum but still worked fine. Recently it began to run longer than the usual 27 seconds it takes to open or close and when I checked it, it did not completely close the damper. I thought it was defective and failed. I was wrong. When I got the new one and had the old one out, I tested it with my multimeter and also moved it to the open and close positions with 24 amps AC and it worked fine and was quiet. So I reinstalled it and realized that the mounting screws/motor mounts weren't tightened enough from last repair and also neither was the damper armature on the motor axel. I'm still learning as I go after 35 years of home ownership. Saving the new motor for backup.

Q: will this replace (and fit perfectly) a Zonefirst EWC MST?

Not familiar with a Zonefirst. The unit shown works on 24VAC on my system, and drives a vain type damper open/close. If it looks exactly like the one in your system, it will probably work. If not, better check with the manufacture of the system. Sorry can't be more specific. ova

Greetings, The Trol-A-Temp and Zonefirst switches are the same switch but with a different brand name. They perform the same function and should be interchangeable. Best regards and good luck. Wayne

Q: What is the best thermostat to use with this damper motor MSTN?

any 24 volt thermostat will work fine.

Greetings. The damper motors are controlled by a Zone Controller, such as the Honeywell HZ311 TrueZONE Panel. The panel controls the 18-30 VAC to drive the damper motor open or closed as required. The Zone Controller also has outputs to control the heating and cooling systems so that when any of the thermostats request heat or cool, the panel will response by energizing the system plus opening at least one of the zones and closing any zones that do not need heat or cool. The input to the Zone Controller is a Thermostat, one for each zone. Any thermostat should do, just make sure that the Thermostat and Zone Panel are compatible with the heating and cooling system installed. I hope this helps.

Q: What size is this actuator? Will it replace a 30 year old Trol-A-Temp actuator? Don't know what the Mod# is of the old one.

I have used the ZoneFirst model MST 24 volt two position motor to replace my Trol-A-Temp motors. Is a direct replacement. Original Trol-A-Temp motors were from 1973 vintage control system/dampers. Seems to work well after several years. Perhaps Honeywell bought them out. But, both Honeywell and ZoneFirst motors still show up on Amazon web site!

I don't know about 30 year old actuator, but they work on my 20 year old actuator.

The actuator is a direct replacement for the Trol-A-Temp actuators for a wide variety of the damper sizes. Just make sure that your system supports the Power-Open and Power-Close feature that most of the older actuators used.
