For techs, I usually short the terminals to perform the discharge and recently did experience damaging a dual CAP by doing so. Decided to get one of these to prevent damage but more importantly to prevent sparking. The magnetic tip that inserts into the included alligator clip is a plus as it speeds up the service time. I recommend that depending solely on the LED may not be good practice. And do note that the discharge time is around 5 secs +/- 3; based on my use cases so far. Best to bridge the terminals with something like a insulated screw driver afterwards just as a precaution. Having said that , definitely highly recommended.

No reason for this to exist
If a motor is good, the cap will discharge through the motor windings making this device of no value. If the motor winding are open it is possible for the cap to hold a charge and for the cap to be damaged then discharged with a screwdriver. So what? If you are going to replace a motor you are always going to replace the cap anyway. Don't waste your money and tool bag space on this unnecessary tool.

It worked great.
The discharge pen worked great. Sadly, the capacitor wasn't the problem. On the bright side, I didn't get zapped by the old one because I was able to safely discharge it.

For safety above all else
Pull up a slow motion, view of discharging a capacitor with a screwdriver and see all the small shrapnel that comes off the terminal ends that's why this tool exists

Great tool
Don't listen to the 1 star review. He/She obviously has no idea and is going to get somebody hurt. Also probably never worked on York chillers with the huge capacitor bank that will kill you if you don't follow proper precautions and test!

As expected
Overpriced for what it is but I like having the correct tool.
Wire and connector seem a bit delicate, though.
