I bought two of these for each of our trucks
Great idea for helping to move heaters around. We have used them for removing old heaters and also getting new heaters into place. I have not had any issues with these causing damage to nipples or heater tanks. You can make them screw into the top nipples, or even the heater drain on the bottom (we often do both when going up stairs).
I have seen people talk about making these out of some pipe and fittings, which is certainly possible and would likely work just fine.

You have to be a giant to use them. Sale me the one that goes around the heater with handles on each side that attach quickly to remove heater, now that would be nice. I've seen them before but can't find them anywhere

So handy!
Friend recently almost ripped his finger off trying to get a water heater out of an attic. There isn't really anything to hold onto when handling them. Whoever came up with this handle is genius!

Good handle on things
I know most plumbers make their own handles and things to make moving a water heater easier, I've been one of them. I ordered 2 of these and was greatly surprised to find out these were steel and heavy duty. I keep one on my van and gave the other to a guy who helps move them frequently. These work great! A friend bought 2 himself after seeing these. Screws onto 3/4" MIP with ease and secures well.
