works great!

I just had the Watts 009 inspected today by our water company. It is protecting my water supply from potential backflow from my irrigation system. It passed with flying colors. The inspection guy loves this model. It was easy to install (my cousin and I did it in about 1.5 hours, and we're rookies). Beacuse it's outside, we used unions, so I'll be able to remove it each autumn to avoid it freezing. Great product!

Internal plastic parts need extra care

If you live in an area where there are freezing winter temperatures, then you should remove the check valves and stem for the winter. Otherwize you will have to replace them...which costs about the same as the whole unit. I would have given the unit a 5 if the parts were not so expensive.

Great Service

I ordered this part to replace one that had frozen in late fall, perfect replacement and prompt service. The price was $200 less than my local sprinkler people wanted to charge me. Hopefully I won't need a new one anytime soon, but I would definitely buy it from SupplyHouse again.

Q: Does this meet ASSE 1024? Also, Montgomery County Maryland insists this must be replaced every five years, what is the manufacturers recommendations on replacement?

ASSE 1024 applies specifically to dual check backflow preventers. This is an RPZ assembly, which is similar but adheres to the ASSE 1013 standard. RPZ assemblies are typically a step past dual checks as far as backflow prevention goes, so it is likely suitable for the application but you may want to check with the code authorities. 009 RPZs have many available repair and rebuilt kits, so barring some sort of catastrophic failure it should be rebuildable and last many years under normal operating conditions.

The unit may be drained , however It is not recommended to install this unit in an outdoor location where freezing conditions may occur. LF009 should be installed above ground in an insulated enclosure.

Pressure Drop is directly related to flow rate. See link for graph of Delta Pressure VS. Flow http://media.wattswater.com/ES-009.pdf

I've used a 3/4" Watts product like this one for over 10 years at my house with no issues. Sent from my Verizon Wireless 4G LTE DROID

Yes, definitely. They will occasionally drip or spit a bit of water from the relief drain hole. Be sure you take this into consideration when you choose your installation location.
