The ProLine XE 50-Gallon Power Vent Liquid Propane Water Heater is engineered to maximize efficiency while offering greater flexibility in installation options. Featuring a 50-gallon (nominal) tank and a 40,000 BTU propane burner, the GPVL-50 (LP) Power Vent delivers a first hour rating of 79 gallons and a recovery rate of 44.7 gallons per hour. This model features a 0.72 Uniform Energy Factor and carries a 6-year limited warranty. Environmentally-friendly insulation and factory-installed heat trap nipples reduce heat loss for maximum energy savings. This ProLine XE water heater is designed with A. O. Smith's superior commercial-grade tank protection. Advanced tank features include stainless steel CoreGard anode rod, Blue Diamond glass lining and DynaClean automatic sediment-cleaning system, all designed to help protect the tank from the corrosive effects of water and extend the life of the water heater. Works well, easy to install
The delivery was very quick which helped greatly in our situation. We are homeowners that replaced our electrical water heater with this gas one. My husband, who has some knowledge in this area, was able to easily install it. The fan noise is relatively quiet. Overall we were pleased with it.

Rotten egg smell...
As a water heater it is impressive, although heavy and bulky. So if you have the room for it and can manage putting it in place, it works really well with the EXCEPTION that it uses an aluminum sacrificial anode. I cannot be certain but the prior model I replaced this with might have used a magnesium anode, and I had no problems (note that if you have well water with a water softener, I read that magnesium anodes don't last long which might explain why my last water heater only lasted 5-1/2 years). Depending on the type of water that you have, there is a strong rotten egg smell to the hot water as a result of the aluminum anode. The hot water also has a different feel to it as a result. Since this is not considered a warranty issue or defect, you have no choice other than to figure out how to have your water pre-treated/post-treated, OR replace the anode with either magnesium (which doesn't guarantee the smell will go away) or a third-party powered anode. I decided on the powered anode option, and for a little over $100 and a bit of hard work to replace the aluminum anode, the rotten egg smell is gone and the water now has a normal feel to it - i.e., no impurities as a result of that aluminum anode. After only about 2 months of use, the aluminum anode I pulled out of the water heater was caked with white goop that smelled and had a disgusting greasy feel to it - that goop was no doubt leaching out into the hot water!
The disadvantages to replacing this aluminum anode with a powered anode are (a) the extra cost, (b) the additional labor, and (c) it voids your water heater warranty. By the way, AO Smith has powered anodes in their top of the line water heater products - fancy that...

IN HOT WATER AGAIN
Had some questions about the unit, called A.O. Smith directly and actually spoke to a real technician! With my questions answered I then installed unit. Unit installed with no surprises and fired up on first try. Fan is quiet enough that it can't be heard in upstairs living areas. Temperature setting is on medium and our family of four, eighteen and up, have not ran out of water in the last month of usage. The unit comes with the PVC adapters needed to run your tubing. Also includes the termination elbow and the stainless steel screen to keep out bugs. Includes a cover ring for exit hole to make installation look professional. The only thing it does not include that is hard to find is the condensation tubing, wish it did!!! Hope this helps.

Replacement Direct Vent Water Heater
Replaced a 7 year old Rheem (6 year warranty of course) with a slow leak that had been purchased from a local home improvement store. My plumber neighbor couldn't even find one locally. Supply House had a very good price on it with free delivery. Heater was shipped on a pallet which reduced damage. Unit arrived with a couple of minor dents that didn't affect performance. I think all heaters have this issue now. Only negative is the air intake snorkel on the AO Smith. I ended up removing it to get it down the basement and through the doors; otherwise it's too wide. Not sure how useful it is. I've never had an issue with combustion on other models. I re-attached it once I got it into place. Unit heats water very well.
