Works as Advertised

I had an A.O. Smith for 16 years before the fire eye sensor went bad, and of course there are no replacement parts on the market for that unit, so just decided to invest in a newer, more efficient A.O. Smith model than throw money at an older, less efficient model. Over the later years I did have to clean the fire-eye sensor periodically. If not clean the unit would not open the main gas valve after the pilot was lit since it didn't know it had a flame to light the main gas burner. It was ready to go, but just didn't know it was safe to flow gas. This unit seems to be really well built like the last A.O. Smith I owned, and it is absolutely true that the setting on just 'Hot' puts out water that is more than satisfactorily hot for washing dishes and clothing. I actually turned it below the hot setting since for our needs it was initially too hot at the sink. Didn't give it a 5 star since I haven't owned it long enough to see how all the newer safety upgrades such as a sealed combustion chamber work over time. I suspect it will last as long as the last unit, so I would definitely recommend this 40 gallon unit for those looking to downsize from a 50+ gallon unit. I also appreciate that the forced vent blower fan is so much more quiet than the 16 year old unit.

Working fine

Have had the hot water heater installed for about a week now and it is working fine. Much quieter than my old unit and with the 50K BTU burner the first hour rating is higher than my old 50 gallon unit. Ordering was easy and delivery was within a couple of days with no issues. A little disappointed with the overall quality however. The flexible gas line from the gas valve to the burner was too long so somebody bent it like a pretzel to take up the extra length. Consequently somebody bent the outer gas door to fit over the distorted gas line which made for a pretty ugly unit This was very obvious and do not understand how it passed a final quality inspection like that. Only took me a couple of minutes to correct it. Also found several sheet metal screws laying in the bottom of the shipping box. Don't know if they belong to something or if they are extras.

Working GREAT

I come from a family of plumbers and AO Smith has always been first choice for water heaters. This is our first power vent water heater and I am surprised how quiet it actually is. Functions well, quick recovery. Our family of 3 has no issue with ever running out of hot water... even when doing laundry and showering at the same time. (not the same place of course)

Worked Great Until Sudden Leaks

Bought this water heater to replace very old WH that came with home we bough. Worked great for 6 years, never ran out of hot water, really never had any problems. Cleaned/drained it every year or so. Came home yesterday to find top of Dip Tube had completely corroded; steam from hot water in tank was leaking/venting out of the top and water was leaking all over the floor. Very disappointed that this only lasted 6 years. Is conveniently 3 months after warranty expired. Will not be buying AO Smith brand again.

2nd time was the charm....

With the understanding of the current delivery logistical issues in the country, my 1st shipped unit arrived after 3 weeks, but the transport carrier YRC, failed to properly secure the unit to the side walls of the cargo van. The 2 vinyl straps that held it to the skid weren't enough to keep it upright and the unit arrived laying horizontal on top of the gas valve and damage to the side walls. Of course I rejected the shipment. I contacted customer service and they were able to get me another unit delivered within 5-7 business days via Fed Ex. It was in perfect condition and the service was as expected. The price was also $300 less than my local plumbing supply house for the same unit...... So, although it's 300$ more than 18 months prior (pre pandemic) the experience was as good as I could hope and reasonable for a quality product w/ delivery to my door w/ lift gate service as most residences have no loading dock! LOL....

Great hot water heater, but not cheap

Have a large household and have two water heaters. First one went and grabbed one of these and it worked great. Then the second went and we got another for an additional $400 just six months later. Did all the work ourselves, but the prices are just getting ridiculous. Great units that provide hot water for 9 people in our home. So much better than our 20 year old units we replaced, and a lot quieter blower. Hoping these last 20+ years as well.

these things are bullet proof

this is my go to 40 gallon power vent heater I have never had any issues, and I'm glad I started converting all my affluent water tank replacements to power vent... hook up the gas, water and vent, plug it in, set the temp, and you're done...

Ao Smith lp gas water heater

Our last AO smith water heater was almost 24 years old Nd started leaking. We knew we wanted another when we replaced it. This one is very quiet and seems to be living up to the qualities we expect from AO Smith

Very Happy, So Far

So Far, So Good. 2 weeks in. Installation was DIY. SupplyHouse tech support was great! Pay close attention to venting specifications as the unit's sensors are right on.

Q: why do you need a power vent water heater-I just bought 2-40gal & the pilot light goes out after a few hours,do l need a power vent ,the original ones lasted 18 yrs venting from basement to chimney

Power vent water heaters generally have blower motors that allow them to exhaust horizontally out side walls. They still pull combustion air from indoors. Direct vent units also have blowers, but they have a second vent pipe for bringing intake air from outdoors.

Q: Hi, I would like to know if this heater draws intake air from the outside of the house. Thanks,Carl

Power vent units like this one draw combustion air from inside the house. Direct vent models bring intake air from outdoors and require either a second protrusion from the building or a concentric vent kit in order to do this.
