Old-House Heating Control

Our house took two years to build in the 1920's with technology that predated what we take for granted today. Heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) was a new concept. Plastic was not invented yet. Residential electricity was in its infancy. Furnaces evolved from huge low-pressure steam to hot water to forced-air powered by coal to oil to natural gas. Steam pipes had asbestos insulation. Do we fix it up or gut it down to its external shell and rebuild the entire inside? We chose to do what we could afford to make it safe and livable at first, and gradually more efficient as we could afford to do so. The 94-yeqar-old manual valves were rusted solid. We needed new supply valves and more accurate zone control. We installed thermostat radiator valves in the four second-floor bedrooms. The Honeywell horizontal angle threaded radiator valve was the solution. Our heating system became more efficient. We had to shut off the manual valve to the radiator in the first floor foyer to re-balance the system. Suggestion: Use Teflon plumber tape to cover the threads to avoid galvanic corrosion. That tape insulates the brass pipe threads from the cast iron and zinc or steel threads to break the galvanic couple. It also provides a better seal to prevent leaks. Make sure that you choose the correct valve body configuration. The thermostat must be horizontal and facing away from the radiator or it will not work properly..
