switch over device

I use this for turning on a fan for a fan coil or to operate a 3-way valve to seitch between a wood boiler and fossil fuel boiler

These are garbage, but at least they're expensive

These used to be a "buy it once and it will run for decades" and I have had to replace nearly every one I've installed in the last couple years. I use them to switch from a wood boiler to backup furnace burner when the temp in the pipe drops, and after about a year, they stop reading the temp correctly and on a 180 degree pipe will have to be dialed all the way down to the bottom end of the scale to switch. they've cost me hundreds or maybe thousands in service calls and replacement parts. I will never be using them again.

I would buy again

Replaced failing (had cracks in bulb) mercury switch aquastat with this new thermostat. Properly disposed mercury aquastat as hazardous waste.

I would buy this again.

I put a heater running off the hot water heating .this controls the fan when the heat comes on. I did use a hose clamp to mount it to the pipe works better then the supplied hardware.

I would buy this product again, but

The manufacturer needs to improve the pipe strapping method. I realize that the existing strapping method has been used for decades, but it is well past time to improve upon it. One area needed improvement is a way to more securely attach the unit to the pipe requiring temperature monitoring - especially on smaller diameter pipes. The existing method using multi-hole strap, tends to not allow for doing so, and one can't effectively get the bolt through two straps that are close enough so that when pulled together the unit tightens to the pipe to hold in desired specific position sufficiently so that vibration does not cause the unit to rotate out of position.

Great for boiler thermal purge

I just installed two of these on our two oil boilers. Strapped them onto the supply pipe coming out of the boiler and wired them to the main aquastat circulator contact. They supply power to the circulator after boiler shutdown to continue extracting residual heat from the boiler. I have them set to stop when supply water temp drops below 90 degrees. So far they're working great.

Definitely worth it. Local supply house sold us wrong item.

Ordered as a replacement due to local Supply house selling us a used item and it was wrong. SupplyHouse.com always comes through when needed. Most of the time we have what we need next day seems like. Thank you.

Hello, thanks for writing in. No, you would need one aquastat per unit.

Hi This model is mounted to a pipe (3/4 inch copper) in my case and the bulb (temperature sensor ) is under the control and relay connected by a small copper tube. There was no way in this model to mount the temp sensor away from the relay housing since the mount is what makes the physical contact with the pipe and the tube is short and rather rigid.

Q: I noticed one of these strapped on to a Modine heater in the laundry room area of our basement (installed by prior owners). The temp dial is set to 150 degrees and the differential dial is set to 5. It runs off the Buderus oil boiler and one thing I notice on a heat call in our basement is that the Modine will blow hot air initially and then when the downstairs thermostat shuts off because the heat call is satisfied, it still keeps blowing cold air for awhile afterwards. Is this normal or should I adjust any of the dialed settings and would that prevent it from blowing cold air? Any suggestions???

Hi Yes the behavior you see is most likely intentional. I have one of these Aquastats on a blower using a System 2000 boiler and the system 2000 will continue to circulate the hot water after the Thermostat shuts off and until 5 minutes. So in my case it continues to blow warm air which is ideal. (On ~ 150 off ~ 125.) However if another device calls for the boiler, the hot water line will stop to my blower and the blower will run for a while because the line has not cooled. Originally my system used to blow air controlled by the thermostat only. So I got cold air initially (for a short period until the boiler warmed up.) And then it shut off waiting for another call for heat. It left the boiler warm too. I'm guessing yours was originally way too. So there is most likely a relay that could turn your blower on only when _both_ the temperature and the thermostat are on, if the cool air bothers you . Disclaimer get an electrician to check it out. The other possibility is your boiler does have the ability to circulate hot water for a while after the thermostat turns off. Check your boiler manual. Cheers

The item is an aquastat and it measures the temperature of the hot water flowing through pipes feeding the Modine. It turns the Modine fan on when the water temperature drops and off when the water temperature reaches the desired setting. It does not measure the room temperature.

Q: I have hydro air system: h.w.boiler with circulators and central heating/cooling airhandler with h.w.coil. I want to use aquastat to circulate the water through the coil (until reach min. 120F) before fan is turn on. After T'stat satisfied both fan and circ. off. Is this aquastat is correct application for it or should I get different model?

I used the aquastat on my wood boiler (heat and domestic hot water) to activate a dump zone when the system reached a certain temp. (used as a normally open switch, when setpoint reached going low temp - to hi temp the circuit was closed)

If you are controlling 2 items that you want to turn on and off at the same time one aquastat will work. If you want to turn them on and off at different times you will need more then one.

Should work fine. I use it to control flow on a hot water coil in my coal furnace. The aquastat turns the pump on when the water in the coil is around 150 and shuts off around 135. That way I'm not ciculating cold water into the top of my hot water tank.

Q: What are the lengths of the cap tubes? Part numbers?

This aquastat does not have an extended capillary, but it does include a bracket for strap-on mounting.

- energy guy

The capillary sensor itself is about 3 inches long, as shown in the photo. The tube between the sensor and the unit is only long enough to reach the sensor bulb which is within the back of the unit. This unit is designed only to strap directly on to the pipe and the directions indicate it requires one inch or greater diameter. I am using it on a half inch pipe and need to modify it by adding some spacers as the bracket is wider than a half inch. When the unit is installed it is on the pipe and the capillary sensor is held to the pipe by the unit itself. The sensor is not visible or accessible when the unit is clamped onto the pipe. If you need a unit with a remotely mounted sensor that is a different model, also available at PEX.
