Replaced a 22 year oldTekmar unit

The Tekmar system worked very well for all these years only a few minor replacements. I could not expand the unit any more, like changing to programmable thermostats etc. So I went to a trade show and spoke to both reps, can't tell you the difference in both companies attitudes, I will not go further with this. Spoke to Taco, did my research, found Taco was less expensive with quality. Technical support was great and the ZVC406 was exactly what I needed and was easy to install. I can pick and choose what thermostats I want to pair up to the unit and will eventually buy the outdoor indoor sensor. Oh,and your company is always right on target.

Most Liked Negative Review

I would never purchase this. Be careful faulty design.

I used this control ZVC406-EXP and ZVC404-EXP for a 10 unit building with ten separate zone valves and PC700 boiler reset. After changing all the values, installing new t-stats, controls and reset I found out that my pump runs even if outdoor reset temperature is not met. I contacted Taco and they said this is normal operation "the control will not fire the boiler however the valve(s) or pump will run because a demand is present. No one typically would turn the heat on if it was 80F outside". If one of the units has their t-stat set to call for heat the pump will run regardless of out door temperature. This can easily happen in a multi unit building if tenants accidentally set or change t-stat. Let me make that clear, if it's 80 degrees, middle of summer, with a reset of 60 degrees and one of your t-stats happens to be calling for heat, your pump will run all summer. What good is this reset? This is not standard operation for other controls, Tekmar control does not operate like this. Don't purchase this control. Some of these reviews look suspect to me. Taco service was not helpful. Valves seem okay, but I'm waiting for that gotcha.

Get the expandable version

I bought this as a replacement for a taco zone controller that failed after 9 years. I got the expandable version this time as it has more features beyond just being expandable - specifically it has a setting for "exercising" the valves and pumps every 2 weeks to prevent them from seizing up over the summer. My thermostats have a similar setting to exercise the system but I like that I have the option of offloading this feature to the zone controller if I ever change out my thermostats. For the price difference of $11, I don't know why they sell the non-expandable version.

Failed after about 8 months

Installed this unit to replace a rat's nest of wiring along with some new t-stats. Definitely cleaned everything up and made it much easier to see what was happening/which t-stats were calling for heat, etc. With that said, the unit failed in about 8 months. 1 zone went completely dead (no power) and two others had a flickering power light. Had to buy a new unit at high cost and replace it to resolve no-heat situation. Have had other Taco's with no issues for a long time, very frustrated with this one.

I buy this brand regularly but return due to ship damage

The zone control. Was shipped on time and delivered without physical damage to out side of box. There was a delay at job to install control. Once open the box the control board was found with broken clips and loose board internal damage- since I needed to get the boiler system back on line, I attempted to install but the second -1of 2 transformer was overheating and the respective zone were not functioning properly. A return request was sent . I had to buy a taco controller locally.

Great product, easy to install, major upgrade

SupplyHouse had the right product at the best price! They also have the longest warranty/return policy. The hardest part of upgrading to new thermostats with C wire and modern controls was all about taking out the old WR valves and putting in the new Taco valves. The wiring is totally self explanatory and the options are great. We made one mistake on a thermostat, but the circuit board fuse did its job! swapped it out and all was good. This is an even better value given the transformers are integrated (a $50 value).

Great Product - Super easy install

Upgraded from a homemade concoction of transformers and terminal ends to this beautifully designed ZVC! Install was beyond straightforward and Taco has numerous helpful YouTube videos on how to wire this into your hydronic heating system. Finished result was neat and clean and now I can actually tell which zone is calling for heat! Priority function for the domestic hot water also a big plus!

This should work directly with your Tekmar thermostats as long as they are 24V.

Q: I have a system with two ~2003 era zone valve controllers in a Master-Slave configuration. The slave may be bad as two of the zones are not controlling properly. Can I replace my slave with one of these new ones? Are the new ones backward compatible with the older version?

you may be able to, not all of Taco's zoning systems are backwards compatible. it would be best to have us or Taco confirm compatibility.

Q: Will this unit work with Uponor (Wirsbo) 4 wire actuators SKU: A3010522. Will the end switch function work on all 6 zones. Also, I will currently be using three zone actuators but plan to use all six actuators in the future any problems not wiring all 6 for the time being.

Yes, this is the right unit for the 4 wire actuators. I had a 12 loop manifold and 6 zones with 6 thermostats. I grouped several loops (actuators) together to work with the 6 zones of the Taco unit. I then connected 6 thermostats. I then wired the end switch to the Tekmar 374 Mix Demand. When a thermostat would call for heat the end switch would close the mix demand as well as the relay for the circulator pump on the manifold loop. The 374 took care of the primary loop to maintain the primary loops reset temperature, the variable speed mixing pump and read the temperature on the secondary loop to adjust the variable speed pump's output. So in short yes this should work however do some homework on the rest of the system for radiant is not simple but not rocket science. Look at the Tekmar product or Taco products for mixing to ensure you are sending the right temperatures through the loops off the secondary manifold.

The Taco 6 Zone control will work with your wirsbo actuators. The yellow wires are your 24 volt feed to the actuator, they go on terminals 1&2 on the selected zone of your choice. The red wires on the actuator are your end switch, they go on terminals 3&4 on the same zone. When there is power to the 6 zone relay the green LED will light. When there is a call for heat from your two wires on the thermostat R&W, the yellow LED will light on that zone. After a short period of time the end switch will make in the actuator, that will make the red LED light to come on the same zone. That will pull in X&X on the control module, those terminals should be wired to the boilers X&X or T&T terminals, depending on the boiler control. Taco has a nice wiring diagram you can follow included. If any zone is calling, that end switch will close and pull in the boiler. It is a set of dry contacts with no power going through them. So one zone can pull in the boiler or all six, it doesn't really matter how many. Now if you are using all 6 zones for wirsbo actuators, do not turn on the priority switch. That is there if you are using the boiler to heat domestic hot water with an external tank. You would wire the zone marked priority to the tank with a Taco zone valve or equal. When the tank calls for heat, like during morning showers it over rides all the other zones so that the boiler gives the tank only its heat to satisfy it. You can wire 3 zones now and 3 zones in the future, the control doesn't care. It is a great control for your job. Good luck

Q: What is the difference between the ZVC406-EXP-1 and the ZVC406-3, they appear to be the same, only the EXP is more expensive, also can I hook the RMB-1 into one of these to control my infloor heat as one of the zones?

The -EXP control is "expandable," meaning that it can be connected to other -EXP models if you need to add additional zones. It is possible to connect a Radiant Mixing Block to a ZVC.

Q: I have 6 heating zones plus DHW I need on Priority. What is the best way to "expand" the 6 valve control module to handle all? Is a 4 + 4 better than a 6 + 3 for my need?

Both zone valve controls must be EXP models. We would recommend two ZVC404-EXP units.

Q: I am going to be connecting this unit to a TACO RMB-1 for a radiant floor system. I do not want to have the RMB-1 control the boiler. How would you suggest I wire the two together? Or should the RMB-1 be the control for the boiler?

You would wire the RMB-1 to the boiler as if it were a thermostat. Your boiler control will still control the boiler. The RMB-1, when on, will act as a thermostat would in relation to the boiler.

If you are zoning by pump, you should use a switching relay. This control is for systems zoned by zone valves.

Zone Valve Controls with priority allow domestic hot water (i.e. an indirect water heater) to take precedence over other calls to the boiler.
