The FVIR-compliant ProLine 40-Gallon Direct Vent Natural Gas Water Heater is to designed to draw air from outside the home, eliminating problems caused by insufficient indoor ventilation. The unit has horizontal air intake and venting on all models up to 80" from the outside wall with no electrical power needed. Featuring a 40-gallon (nominal) tank and a 38,000 BTU gas burner, the GDV-40 Direct Vent delivers a first hour rating of 64 gallons and a recovery rate of 41 gallons per hour. It carries a 6-year limited tank warranty, and meets Low NOx emission requirements. Environmentally-friendly insulation and factory-installed heat trap nipples reduce heat loss for maximum energy savings. This ProLine water heater is designed with A. O. Smith's superior commercial-grade tank protection. Advanced tank features include stainless steel CoreGard anode rod, Blue Diamond glass lining and DynaClean automatic sediment-cleaning system, all designed to help protect the tank from the corrosive effects of water and extend the life of the water heater. A. O. Smith's ProLine water heaters are residential products built to commercial-grade standards and are only available for purchase through professional wholesalers and contractors.

Great Product
I needed a direct vent product and was trying to decide between this tank and an on demand water heater. After reading alot of reviews I decided on the waterheater because of consistant complaints about the on demand system.
My only complaint was the shipping. They keep calling and setting a time to deliver and then after wasteing half a day they would call and reschedule. After a week of this I went down to the freight company and picked it up only to find it scratched and dented.The damage was not enough to prevent it from working and it is in my utility room where noone will see it so I keep it but I was disappointed in the shipping company.

so far good, first unit arrived bad because of shipper and Supply House sent replacement. I might buy more from this site if I need other stuff in the future

So Far So Good
Received timely although couple of dings from transportation. Replaced 23 Y.O. AO-Smith G-40 Direct Vent and all went well, except we had to enlarge hole in wall from 5" to 6" for piping. AO-Smith included all necessary parts from Silicone, outside box, plenty of flex vent tubing to even 2 small pipe foam insulation for supply and heat water feeds. Relief Valve was a bit lover so we directed to pan vs. out wall. Started up and heated quickly, set on lowered setting than previous heater was plenty hot. Looks good too.

I highly recomend this Water Heater
AO Smith water heaters are the best on the market. This 40 gallon Pro Max is just another great example of the AO Smith brand. I had a AO Smith previuos to this one and it lasted 20 years. I then purchased a different brand (big mistake) with in one week I returned it and purchased this AO Smith. Lets just say I learned my lesson to stick with a proven Brand. We are very happy to have a AO Smith water heater again!

Very happy with this product
Our 20-year-old AO Smith unpowered direct vent water heater finally gave up the ghost, and had to hunt around for a replacement. We located this water heater at Pex, which was very similar. The efficiency of this water heater allowed us to go from a 50 to a 40 gallon tank and still accommodate a family of 5. We even turned down the heat setting to its lowest level.
We appreciate its efficient use of gas and the fact that no electricity is needed to run the exhaust, which saves money and means it works when the power goes out.
