HVAC Service Manager - Very Reliable Product

The company I work has installed several hundred of these boilers. I can tell you they are extremely reliable, fairly easy to maintain, and definitely intuitive to troubleshoot. I would highly recommend the Ultra Boilers to anyone.

A Complex Install, but Intelligent Unit

I installed this boiler to replace a 23-year old Smith model that was socking me with $300+ per month gas bills and I couldn't be happier. The first gas bill of heating season was only $91! There are a lot of steps to this install, and you end up jumping around the manual quite a bit to work on all the different pieces, but it's not super complicated. My setup uses 2 zones with independent thermostats and zone valves, so I paired this model with a Taco zone valve controller and they play well together. For anyone in a similar setup, wire your system circulator (not the boiler circulator) into the zone valve controller instead of into the boiler. This prevents the system circulator from running before at least one of your zone valves is open and over-pressurizing that part of the loop.

This machine is a Dream come true

this is a true beauty, the design looks great, the menu is really simple, and the efficiency and the simplicity of this machine is amazing, we are extremely happy with it. I always thought the heating issues at our house was due to poor heating design (we have Radiant Floor Heating), but now I learned that was not the case, it was poor Boiler, ever since we replaced the boiler, rooms that were always cold, are now perfectly warm, sometimes the house got so warm with the settings we used to have, that we have been lowering and re-adjusting the thermostats around the house to make sure it doesn't get too warm. Very happy with this Purchase.

hi efficiency boiler

The 1st boiler that was shipped was damaged, but Supply House promptly shipped a replacement. The boiler has been installed and is functioning perfectly. One call was made to Weil McLain for the system setup and tech support was prompt and courteous.

Working well through many cold nights

We had three of these units installed in 2 old 1930's building that has many old radiators. The system has ran without a hitch since 2012. The system regulates the water flow and temperature by a thermostat outside and inside. The system is easy to monitor and makes the Maintenance Departments easier and more efficient. It has gone through 2 extreme temperature winters in very inefficient insulated buildings without a hitch. Very easily the best piece of equipment in use in our buildings. Highly recommended

Q: How is the ~95% efficiecy calculated? If I divide the BTUs out buy the BTUs I get <80%.

This unit has an IBR output rating of 183,000 and a DOE BTU rating of 207,000. We use the IBR ratings on the site. They assume that the boiler is located in an unheated space and that the heat lost from the boiler and its surrounding piping is wasted. The DOE rating (which will always be higher) assumes the boiler occupies a heated space. The 95.4% efficiency rating Weil-McLain lists uses the DOE rating and somewhere between the 46 and 230 BTU possible input ratings of the boiler.

Q: This unit has priority controls. How could I use this boiler to operate 8 zones with pumps? If it can only run one at a time... then should I consider another boiler? Any suggestions?

You can purchase a circulator zone controller. Weil-Mclain sells the WMCR-6 and the WMCR-4E expanders that would handle up to 10 circulators. The boiler control signal would come from X X on the WMCR and connect to Heat Deamand 2, P15, terminals 1 & 2. The DHW would be connected to Heat Demand 1, P15, terminals 4 & 5.

Q: Does this unit only control 3 zones? If so, can it be expanded to 6 zones?

According to the manufacturer, the Ultra control is a priority control, not a zone control. People do use it like that but it will not heat more than 1 priority at a time and with 6 zones that would be a problem.

Yes i have 8 zones.. in my setup there's a main pump for Heat Demand (thermostats) which i think they call supply, another for DHWater and a third that pumps into boiler. When any thermostat calls for heat demand a zone valve is opened and boiler turns on. Each zone does not necessarily have it's own pump - although one zone does have an extra pump for radiant heat which i'm assuming is needed for the greater length of tubing in the floor for that radiant zone. When counting Weil-mclain "Zones" : Typical as sold, one zone is circlulator pump to boiler itself, one zone is DHW, that's two zones down if utilizing DHW.. So without delving into your home's size calculations the basic pump setup i mentioned could pull water thru six zones w six thermostats, each being opened and closed by zone valves and associated controls.

The main boiler piping should be 1 1/2". Your zone take-offs can be 3/4" if your system is sized correctly.
