Solid reliable IN6 steam boiler from Burnham
We upgraded from a 20yr old Peerless oil fired steam boiler to this Burnham IN6 gas boiler 13 years ago & it has performed reliably requiring just thermocouple replacement this year when standing pilot light was going out after multiple re-lights. My Burnham IN6 was installed by Nat'l Grid when they had a energy efficiency rebate program initiative underway in 2005. Total cost for IN6 and installation with a replacement 50 gallon hot water tank was roughly $4500 with cart-away of the old Peerless & tanks. I would have kept the old Peerless however during the time I underwent surgery, was my back for weeks, & underground oil supply line ruptured making the oil fumes unbearable. Was going to repair the ruptured line however everyone called wanted to run the line above ground making this no good. Research & researched for a week weighing pro's & con's & decided to upgrade to natural gas heating (oil tank was over 50+ years old making it a eventuality it would also fail, I hated having to annually vacuum out the oil heat exchanger/firebox along with stocking oil nozzles & filters, but more importantly oil prices were very cost prohibitive at the time) & have no complaints whatsoever. I went with the standing pilot light version of the IN6 versus solid state ignition option since it was easier to personally troubleshoot, repair & maintain. Natural gas is the way to go....no noise, no fumes, no maintenance but most importantly its a cheaper fuel and come time to sell gas has a better selling feature over oil.
Using youtube videos as a guide I easily replaced the original thermocouple this last heating season & it took less than 10 minutes saving me a minimum of $150 in outside labor & inconvenience. Be sure to backflush your boiler each year after the heating season & replace with clean water & your boiler will last. I also swapped out all 3 of my drain valves with quality ball valves & vacuumed out the gas burner tubes. Best boilers have thickest castings
