So far, a great water heater!

I have had this installed since October, and it has been working great! My electric cooperative has an app that shows my daily usage. Before I installed the new water heater, I could always tell when the water heater kicked on by the large spike in energy usage. With the new water heater running in efficiency mode, I no longer have the large spikes when the water heater kicks on. I debated on whether to purchase this one or the 80 gallon for extra water capacity, but so far, I haven't had any issues with the amount of hot water produced in efficiency mode. At this point, I am very happy with this water heater!

The hybrid water heater sounded like a good idea. The ten year warranty (parts only) suggested AO Smith expected it to last at least that long. However, I discovered that at 300 pounds, the unit was more expensive to install than to buy. When it malfunctioned AOS authorized a replacement but removing the bad one and installing the new would cost the same. What broke was the heat pump, but the heap pump could not be replaced alone. So, I ended up running it just on electric mode. The were several iterations involved in getting to that point, including being given erroneous information about running the unit electric only. I don't think anyone purposely misled me, but it's been a long, expensive and frustrating journey. I will not buy another hybrid hot water heater. I know have a very expensive conventional electric hot water heater.

Great Big Hot Water Tank

It's been 3, months since I had this installed and it has performed flawlessly. We had our coldest month with most days in the teens and we never ran out of hot water. Looking at my electric bill it seems it's about $30-$35 less than last year. I have no complaints. Noise level is not noticed (installed in the garage). Great Hot Water Heater!!!! .

Great when it works, terrible when it doesn't

First purchased 5 years ago, compressor failed after about 2 years. AO Smith provided a free replacement (labor not included), and that replacement failed about 6 months ago. When the compressor fails, power use of the unit goes up 3x unless you catch it and put it in electric coil only mode. Contrary to the product description, there is a YouTube video about forcing this into electric backup mode and making it stay there. Heat pump water heaters aren't bad by nature, but I can't say I'd ever buy this unit again. We purchased and had installed a new Rheem unit, so we'll see how that one does.

Piece of garbage

Heater fairly new. 6 months old. And it failed! So heater not repairable. Need to replace. And this people do not cover labor for installing! This is horrible! I'm going to sue them!

I'm happy with the purchase

we had an issue with the compressor not working properly on our first unit right from the start. Our HVAC repair person diagnosed the issue and AO Smith issued a replacment along with Supply House. Supply House was very quick to respond to our issue. The new unit has been been installed and has been working great. It is located in our basement, which sometimes gets much cooler than the rest of the house. I noticed if the temp dips below 64, even on the hybrid setting, we tend to run out of hot water fairly quickly. As long as the room temp is 64 or above, the hot water is great. This unit runs much more quietly than the 10 year old 80 gallon hybrid we had before. Only gave 4 stars because I have not had it long enough to gauge long term performance.

Compressor failure

My compressor failed, many others have experienced same thing. Seems to be a common issue and AO Smith's answer is to leave in electric mode. Thankfully I documented my issue within a few days of warranty expiring, but if I didn't then I'd be paying out of pocket for repairs.

Great unit and literally sips energy...

Using this for a family of 3. We up-sized from a 50 gal indirect unit to provide a little extra capacity. It's well know that HPHW heaters take longer to recover up to temperature, so it's always better to have some overhead. In retrospect, I think the 80 gal unit might have been better for our needs as long showers are typical for teenagers. Unit isn't silent, but the noise doesn't bother in a mech room near a bedroom. I would recommend this unit primarily for the benefit of it's efficiency over other systems.

Good price and good service

Good price and allowed me to get a water heater relatively quickly that all the local big box stores said would take months to get in.
