Best water heater ever!

I got this water heater to replace my oil-fired water heater that gave me endless hot water and home heat. I am glad to be off oil! The heat will be replaced with a heat pump. I have not run out of hot water yet and I do not expect to. I think it has only used the heat pump to keep the water hot. I am currently running in "Hybrid" mode am going to try "Efficiency" mode to see if that works. My electric bill went up $10.00 for the month but I am not sure that was all because of the water heater. The sound is twice as loud as a refrigerator. I have a 1632sqft 3-bedroom split entry home with 2 full baths, one with a deep tub and large rain shower head. Longest shower I have taken to date was 35 minutes. The unit is installed in my garage and is set at 140 degrees. The installation was difficult because the input/output on the unit are not on the top. Be prepared to replumb your piping and plan where your condensate is going to go. Plumbing codes differ from state and county so do good research. Be sure to install additional heat traps made out of the pipe, they work well. If you are tired of burning or want an electrical upgrade this unit is worth the price and hassle.

SAFETY HAZARD

We moved into our brand new house in November of 2021 and this water heater was installed at our request. June of 2023 the less than 2 year old unit blew(see attached picture). It was replaced under warranty. Here we are in February of 2025 and the AGAIN less than 2 year old unit has blown in the exact same way. We assumed at this point that something HAD to be wrong with the wiring of the house since it seems IMPOSSIBLE that 2 water heaters would last less than 2 years. The electrician was here yesterday (not the one that originally wired the house) and confirmed that the issue is NOT the wiring of the house but failure with the unit itself. In addition to these issues, our 5 bathrooms, laundry room, and dishwasher run out of hot water to the point that we have to stagger when everyone (3 teenage boys and 2 adults) can shower in our house based on whether laundry is being done and if the dishwasher is running.

I'm on my second unit, and likely heading to my third

I wanted to love this and did my due diligence by researching all units prior to purchase. Unfortunately, when I was a bit early and so there was apparently not enough data out there. The heat pump tied on my first unit. It was under warranty and so I was given a replacement. However, I had to get that into the basement, install it, and get the old one out. They weigh 300 pounds Control panel went on the second unit. They replaced that too under warranty. And now it looks like it has another problem. I'll be troubleshooting that tomorrow. AO Smith sure didn't get this one right. I've read that others have had the same issues that I've been having. On the positive side, it is being covered by the warranty. But again, that's only for the parts.

Very good buy

My husband and I just bought this for our 3 bedroom cape home and the hot water lasts very long and there's really no delay in getting hot water in the mornings. We're so happy with this purchase and would recommend!

SupIyhouse.com is great. AO Smith HPTU-80N is not.

Supplyhouse.com has been great in helping to resolve a very poorly made product. After receiving 2 HPTU-80N water heaters and both failing due to ECC codes, I received RMA's from AO Smith. I am thankful that I was not stuck for the cost of the units, and I received my money back. Now I have to dispose of 325 pound water heaters that are New. AO Smith could not determine why the units failed. I gave this a 2 because Supplyhouse is a great vendor, and AO Smith did honor their warranty.

Be careful with this product!

This product should not be used with cold ground water in northern states like New England. The compressor runs constantly and burned out. Supply House is excellent. They replaced it, but it was less than two years old. I think the systems are good for the south where the ground water is warmer but when the incoming temperature is around 40°, forget it.
