It only lights when you push the up and down arrows to increase or decrease the temperature, it does not stay lit all the time.
If you push one of the arrow keys on the right the display light will turn on.

Whether it is a dual fuel heatpump or a dual fuel furnace, a TH5110D will not work. You can use a TH5220D for this. If you have a dual fuel heatpump and want options for more control over it you can use the TH9421C or Prestige models. They have options to cater to dual fuel systems.
According to the manufacturer, the replacement for this thermostat sounds like it may be a low voltage thermostat for heating only system, given the age of the application. If you could verify the voltage requirements for the system and if it is a heating only application then they can make an accurate suggestion for replacement. They hesitate to advise based on colors of wire. An 18 gauge wire would work for the application regardless of what color is wrapped around the wires. If you could advise on this they would be glad to make a suggestion. The TH5110D1022 may work but you should contact the manufacturer to confirm.
Yes, that is correct.

This model works with heat pump systems, but keep in mind that it is only 1H/1C.
Batteries are optional if the thermostat is wired to run on AC power when installed. They provide backup power to the thermostat.
