Much better than wire spaghetti

I have four thermostats (two smart, two dumb) and four zone valves. One of the zone valves wasn't working and I couldn't figure out what was wrong with the mess of wires coming and going between thermostats, zone valves, power supply, and boiler. Rather than call in a pro, I decided to buy and install this Taco zone controller on my own. I got it wired up in a couple hours and that problem zone valve is now working fine. After I initially got it wired up with one thermostat per zone, I decided I wanted to combine zones and use only two of my thermostats (one upstairs, one downstairs). I emailed Taco for advice and they responded promptly with a solution (put two zone valve wires into the output terminals for one zone). Now I have two smart thermostats each controlling two zone valves. As a bonus, I now have an actual c-wire to use with my new smart ecobee3 thermostat. It would be cool if this controller also included some "smart home" features like z-wave integration to help control zones or to monitor when zones are energized, but that's probably too much to hope for at this price point. As it is, this controller is a huge bang for the buck.

Nice unit but hums due to very cheap transformer

In most respects this is a pretty well made controller that does what it is supposed to do. However, the 24V transformer hums at the line frequency, and that hum can be "amplified" if the controller is mounted to a sounding board like a sheet of plywood. In case the mfg should ready this, please ask your supplier to use a proper strap for the transformer and to _not_ spot weld the mount to the laminations - thereby shorting them together !!! I am sure that Basler electric knows this, but what works for a 1KVA transformer is not necessarily appropriate for a 15VA transformer. A partial workaround is to drill out the rivets and replace with #10 nylon screws.

Nice unit

This simplifies our system, but more importantly, gives you feedback on which thermostats are on and which valves are open.

Cleaned up my rats nest of wiring for 7 zones of heating

The original installer did a horrible job of wiring my system. I added a zone and have been upgrading all my 2 wire old school thermostats to smart home thermostats. Since they required a C wire I was forced to run new wire to each thermostat. This worked ok, but took a while to figure out what was going on with all the zip tied bundles of wires. I got two Taco controllers and was able to simplify the wiring significantly. In addition, it was way easier to diagnose issues because you have some idea of stages that the thermostat/zone valve/circulator are going through. I had one zone that must have had a broken conductor so I had to swap to a different wire for my C connection. In the old wiring this was a pain, with the Taco it was simple.

Works as expected, easy to setup

I purchased this to install on my oil burner to service 3 zones that already had valve controls but no panel. I'm not an HVAC technician, but I was able to follow the diagrams and instructions to get this working the first time without any issues.

Great product and Service

This is an excellent product and easy to install by anyone with a little electrical knowledge and understanding of thermostats and zone valves. Watch their YouTube videos. I highly recommend Suplyhouse.com. The local plumbing/ heating supply stores would not sell this to me because I wasn't a linseed contractor.

Q: Can I run pumps instead of zone valves with this unit

No, the ZVC404-4 will control the operation of zone valves. For control of multiple pumps with a priority feature you would need a switching relay such as the Taco SR504-EXP-4

Q: can this zone control module control a single zone with 2 loops, and 3 zones with a single loop each? The install instructions only show a single zone control valve wired to single loop. Can you also confirm that it can control a recirculating pump in the heat exchanger loop? Thank you.

Yes, multiple valves can be wired to the same zone. Multiple circulators can also be triggered as well, note the "Optional System and/or DHW and/or Secondary Circulators" diagram on the installation manual.

Q: Do you stock the expansion cards for this unit? If so what are the part numbers so they can be ordered?

Its not an expansion card, you can just link multiple units together.

Q: Is this zone valve control module compatible with the two-wire Mr PEX Thermal Actuator (5120701), or will it only work with the four-wire? I'm planning to hook this up with the Taco X Pump Block, and I am not planning to have an end switch. Thanks!
