Good basic product, easily improved

Installing these under a new bathroom sub-floor. In this application, heat conduction into the floor above is everything. I found the holes in the Joist-Trak to be be too small, and too few, so I drilled out the existing holes to accommodate a #10 screw, and added hole pairs between the pairs of factory holes, a bit closer to the tube channel. This should increase the conduction into the floor, and improve overall effectiveness and efficiency. I will follow up with 10" of AirKrete cementitious foam insulation to make sure all the heat goes up into the floor, not down into the room below.

Nope nope noooooooope!

I ended up using thin gauge snap on style plates as the Joist traks don't full cover the pex, have to be tediously screwed to floor rather than power stapled, and they are rediculously over priced. I heated a floor section side by side with these and snap over plates and couldn't tell any difference in the heating effect above the floor. The only nice thing about these are being able to install them before running pex, but otherwise not a great investment.

Don't try to do with another product, this one it's the best one for radiant heat track above plywood.

Plates work as expected.

Second time purchasing these plates for subfloor pex. They transfer heat much better than just staple up. Our home was entirely fitted with Zurn Pex B before we purchased it. Pex expansion ticking noise at cold start up is noticeable but does not last long. The factory mounting holes should be larger. I drilled ours out to accept a #8 screw. SupplyHouse pricing is competitive and shipping speed is always impressive.

Worked great in my application

No noise when used with Pex al Pex tubing. Worked great for radiant heating. I added aluminum sheet under floor joists then put these up as well for more heat transfer underneath the floors. Perfect set up.

Good heat conduction, sharp edges

I got these mainly to hold the tubing up against the floor until insulation could be installed. I did not expect the thin plates to provide much heat transfer, so I only used them at long intervals, enough to hold up the tubing. Later, using a thermal imager, I was surprised to see how effective the plates are - you can clearly see their outlines in the thermal images. My main concern is the sharp edges. We ran the system for some weeks before the insulation was installed (was actually surprised at how effective they were at heating before the insulation was installed). Discovered that with expansion and contraction, if the tubing did not exit the plate completely straight that the edge would abrade the tubing. So be sure to make long loops at the ends, not short ones. I became concerned about the long term prospects, so pulled the tubing down at the ends of the plates, so that the tubing exits the plate before the sharp edges. Not sure it the tubing will remain in the tract over the long term - guess I'll find out.

I would buy this again

We used thousands of these panels. They work very well if they are installed per spec. You must insulate under the joist where panels are located to perform the best.

Q: Is it possible to run 180 degree water through these directly without dropping the temperature down? I like this system of installing radiant floor heat but would like to use a traditional oil burner if possible?

No, you will need to lower the water temperature down. The maximum temperature you can run is 170 degrees F.

Q: Thinking of putting radiant in the crawl space to heat main floor. Since I'd have to remove the existing fiberglass bats anyway, I would prefer to re-insulate with expanding spray foam. Can this spray foam insulation be sprayed in the joist cavity right onto the panel+tubing? Or is an air gap required for proper heat distribution/dissipation to/from the panel? What is the recommended install procedure for a situation like this? Thanks.

For this installation, no air gap is required. You can spray the foam insulation in the joist cavity and right onto the panel and tubing.

If the panel you mean is a Joist Trak, no air space is needed; you want to transfer from Pex to aluminum to sub-floor without heat loss through air. Air space IS needed if no Joist Trak is used and the Pex is heating an air space (about 2" I believe); here specific insulation is required. As for using spray foam, I don't know the specifics of the insulation or the humidity of the crawl space so I cannot rule out the possibility of trapped moisture causing wood to decay.

Q: I have a 100 sq ft kitchen with a 3/4" hardwood subfloor, then cement and 12" tile. This is with 16" ceteners on the joist. Can I run just one line per joist or will I get hot and cold spots on the floor if I do not run two per joist? I am just trying to have warm floors, I still have the baseboard in there for heat.

You will need 2 lines per joist, one going and one returning. It will provide an even distribution to prevent any cold spots in the floor.

For a 14 Square Foot area you would need 3 pieces of Joist Trak and 14 ft. tubing. The parts would be between each Joist. The panels can be spaced 12", 16", or 18" apart.

The Joist Trak Panels should be mounted beneath the wood subfloor. For example, for a standard ground floor application, you will have to mount and nail these units on the ceiling of the basement to feel the heat on the floor above. The Joist Trak can be attached to the wood subfloor using #8 screws. Be sure to use a screw that is shorter than the subfloor so that it does not go through.
