Bright Idea but not that Bright

Bought this Unit to replace another, similar looking Honeywell, but with 7-Day programming. (My very elderly Father, and apparently his Homecare People, couldn't figure the 7-Day one out) THIS unit would not fit the same Back Plate as the older model. And the backlight isn't very bright. But it is fairly easy to configure, to a wide variety of systems, and doesn't have those complicated HOLD settings - Just on/off and Temp up/down. Would recommend 100% except as noted. A good buy.

I would not buy again

This product is battery operated and when the batteries died a year ago, the heat pump was activated but NOT the fan. This can cause severe damage to the compressor due the significant increase in high pressure. Now the latest, with new batteries the unit froze completely and needed emergency replacement due to -25 degree temps here in MN. Just saying ~ spend the extra cash and get a reliable stat.

Problem with shipping/handling

The thermostats are fine. Ordered many times. This time the boxes arrived crushed and all the batteries and manuals were loose inside the shipping box. Hope the thermostats are not damaged. Will know when they are installed.

I would buy this item again and again

I'm an old school tech. Seen many thermostat types and brands. Work mostly residential and light commercial. The 1003 is easy to install and easy to configure. Getting old don't help with the newer models. Love simple things that works.

The temperature range of this thermostat goes up to 99 degrees Fahrenheit.

Q: I went into the function screen by pushing the arrow down and temp up buttons together to view what the temperature range was set to, now my screen reads "cool on" and is constant. Not flashing... How can I fix this? What does this mean? HELP!

We have no way of trouble shooting units, you would have to contact Honeywell or a technician.

Hmmm... Have not seen that. Would try to "power cycle" the T-stat by removing its power source, waiting several minutes, and reapplying the power. And cross your fingers!!

Q: Would these be compatible use in an RV with 2 furnaces?

you would need to know the control voltage for the furnaces. if its 24volt or millivolt it should but you probably need 1 thermostat for each furnace.

Q: once the temp reaches the set temp how long should it take for the system to shut off also how do set the stat to shut of by setting 1degree difference

Asked by slick 13 years ago

No easy answer. It's not instantaneous when the temp first reads the same as the set point on the stat. Then when the stat shuts off, other chips in your system will time shut down of the compressor and then the blower.

Q: Will this thermostat go from heat to cool and from cool to heat without touching it on a heat pump and how many wires are required

It worked for me with 5 wires.

Yes it will. You will need to 1st enable the auto-changeover feature in the installer menu. Change sub-menu 12 to selection 1. For a heat pump set-up. I would recommend at least 7 wires. 8 if you need an extra emergency heat wire. -Florida & NY Mech Contractor

You can set it for auto change over or manual. It depends for the wiring if you will use the battery or power it with 24v and how many stages you have.. Maximum you will need 8 wires.

Q: I have had this model in our home for 5 yrs and has given us good service, until now. The fan stays on all the time. Does not go off when heating range is reached. Do I need a new (I'd buy if have to) or it is just a miner tweak or torque I could perform. Please advise. Thank you, Joseph

If it has worked for five years and nothing else has changed, then it probably needs to be replaced. But first, try reprogramming it to see if that corrects the problem. Bill

Q: can this be programed so renters can only use a certain temp. range ie 68-78 degrees?

You can use Setup Functions 27 and 28 to do this (see page 7 of the manual - http://s3.pexsupply.com/manuals/1249544874360/Honeywell_TH5220D1003_Install_Guide.pdf ), but there would be nothing to stop someone from changing that setting. Your other option would be to get programmable thermostats with keypad lockout capability.

Yes, thru the installer set up in the instructions.

YES - You can specify a High Limit on the heat, and a Low Limit on the AC, if applicable. Wondering if this is a Good Idea.

Was this review helpful to you?
- Ricky K Jr.

Yes, this thermostat has settings for the minimum cool and maximum heat setpoints. I never thought of using it for rentals like that, but it is a good idea to keep them from setting it at 60 and letting it run.

Q: What is the difference between Heat and Emheat mode on the Honeywell TH5220D 1003 Thermostat with the American Standard heat pump? What does Compressor lock out do, is it economical to do it?

Asked by Bob 16 years ago

HEAT Mode is Regular Heat Stage #1, while EMHEAT is Stage #2 of Multi-Stage Stat. The Compressor Lock Out is a safety feature that protects your system. It is not a function that you do, as this feature works automatically on its own.
