Great use of small places

I have seen a number of Takagi tankless heaters and I asked the owners how they like them. I chose because of them. My tankless works just as they said ,"wonderful". It produces instant hot water now. I can run the dishwasher and take a shower or shower and wash clothes and the hot water doesn't stop. Unfortunately, the way my plumbing is, I have to wait for the hot water to reach the back part of my house. That is no reflection or the water heaters fault. I highly recommend the Takagi to my friends or anybody else.

worked great till it didn't

Install was straight forward, basic wiring, basic plumbing. Had the propane company hook up the gas. It worked fine for about 200 gallons of propane and has since started making a very loud harmonic sound that rattles the pipes in the building. After a call to Takagi, placed a call to the gas company who came out and trouble-shot the heater and determined that the control board and 4 out of the 5 solenoids were defective, and deemed out of warranty. 100 service call plus price quote to repair $650. I paid less than 500 for the unit.

Not for commercial

I have about 15 of these for small residential, and one for a nail salon, and the one for the nail salon has been replaced twice. The heater core starts to leak, and Takagi will not honor the warranty. The rest of the residential are sort of OK. I had a circuit board go out on one, sometimes the heater would not come on. Instead of trying to warranty, I took it from one of the ones with the bad core.

Nice no-frills tankless outdoor propane water heater

Finally decided on the Takagi JR 2 outdoor propane water heater; After a year and a half of reading various manufacturers manuals, and reviews from several retail sources, all fingers kept pointing back to the Takagi JR 2. I was in it for a low to no-frills outdoor style tankless propane water heater with reasonable reliability out of the box, and reasonable pricing. As the outdoor model is a hard-wire unit (110v AC in my case), don't forget to set an electrical box nearby tie in to. The product specs manual had diagrams and measurements for sizing the appropriate outdoor 'closet' (aware of necessary venting), and plumbing the three 3/4" lines (hot water, cold water, propane). Two concerns kept me still looking at other manufacturers; 1) Takagi hints at 'moderate' climates being ok for outdoor installations, but is pretty vague about what their 'moderate' is. Some temperature ranges, heating degree day units, latitudes, elevations would have helped those of us trying to interpret their 'moderate' climate bounds/limitations. 2) Relative to my supply water temperature (on the colder side of things), I was on a breaking point between the JR models and the next higher productivity models/units. Make sure you look at and understand their temperature rise and flow data to make sure you're getting what you expect!

I did by again and again !!

My daughters water heater went out, they discovered it had been leaking and must have leaked below one of the elements. It had to be replaced, so when she called me and told me about it I said "do not replace it with a conventional type" and she answered that she would love to replace it with a tankless. I have a Takagi so I went online and ordered her one, had it in 2 days and then the church I pastor, water heater leaking so I order another and 2 days later it is on my doorstep. Could not ask for better service and with follow-up, I have already had 2 other friends ask about getting one also. thanks SuppjyHouse from North Carolina customer !!

Q: can it be used inside?

No, it cannot. The exhaust vents out of slots on the front of the unit which would be extremely dangerous in an enclosed space.

Q: What is the vent pipe size? Thanks for your help.

On the outdoor tankless there is no vent pipe--the unit vents from a horizontal slot across the top of the unit. J. J. LaRue Thomas

Q: Hi, I have a question regarding this unit venting, I have a 40 Gal tank water heater and it is venting thru the chimney. Can I replace with this unit and using the same venting system? Thanks Jason

The T-KJr2-OS is meant to be installed outside, and uses no venting. The indoor units require category III stainless steel venting, so it is unlikely you can use existing venting if you had a standard atmospheric water heater previously.

According to instruction manual, with the remote controller, the max temperature is 167°F, without the remote, it is 140° F.

The heater is set for 122 from the factory. There is a model that has remote control heat settings. I am not sure what model goes to what temp. but one can go to 165 degrees. There are dip switches inside and different combinations of up and down make different temperatures. I do recall something coming with the heater that said do not set it yourself; get a plumber to do it. Here's a link to an installation manual. http://www.takagi.com/media/19139/110-310-510-TKJr2-TK4-TD2-Installation-Manual-62S051-4.pdf

Q: Curious about the "no venting" in the description. I am afraid that must be for the electric model. So what does this natural gas one use to vent with? Since the unit will occupy the HVAC closet, which has been moved to the attic, I will reuse the hole in the roof the HVAC system used for venting. The HVAC system has gotten a new vent further down the roof. I plan to mount this directly below the existing vent hole, but need to know what kind of vent pipe to use? This website does not say a word, nor do any others. I have seen 3" PVC written about other brands, and very expensive painted metal pipes for another brand. ANd now I am confused. I want to order everything at once.

This model is to be installed outside, that is why it is no vented. There is a model for inside installation which is vented.

You do not want to be looking at the outdoor model, which vents out the front directly into the outdoors. Mine is gas, on an exterior wall, and vents through the horizontal slots at the top of the heater (you can see them in the picture). There is an identical heater with a vent kit--look up that one. Q: How many watts of electrical power are needed by this bad boy? I would like to wire in a stand-by, battery-operated power inverter in case of a power outage.

Mine is a natural gas model and is only using electricity to fire the burner. No where does it state wattage; it's just labelled, "120 volts, less than 3 amps." J.

This runs on standard 110/120 AC outlet. You only power a circuit board. HAROLD D. HOLLAND

wattage = voltage multiply by Amp 120 x 3 is 360 W. it operate with less than 3 amp so it would be less than 360 Watts.

We would not recommend using an outdoor unit in an area where temperatures get below freezing. You would need to contact Takagi directly in order to make modifications for altitudes higher than 6,000 feet.

Was this review helpful to you?
- Sonoradillo

I think Takagi has specified that the outdoor unit should not be sold where winter temperatures fall below an occasional +10 degrees. You'll probably want to ask Takagi themselves--they have a couple of U.S. 800 numbers. J.

Q: Can this be used outside for a camping shower? It looks like it needs an electric start, can that be converted to battery for this use?

This particular one needs to be wired to 110. I do not know if they make a battery start and that would be a brilliant idea. You should contact the company! J.T.

I think it would be difficult due to the piping for gas or propane. If DC can be converted to 120 AC, there is a possibility it could work. HAROLD D. HOLLAND

Not only the start is electric, but it also has an internal computer, a fan and a system that runs on electricity. It needs to be connected to a source of electrical power. 110V Eduardo
