Great Water Heater

Great product. With intermediate skill level, very easy to install and understand manual. Heater is installed in Florida (and in my garage). Only have had it in service for 2 weeks, and it works superbly. Bonus is that it cools down my garage---a big plus here in Florida. When placed in efficiency and/or hybrid mode, expect that the fan will occasionally run---i.e. the cooling factor for the garage. However, if you place it in an interior closet, expect to hear noise from the fan (like a window a/c unit). Of course, if you select the "electric" mode you will not. However, you will not reap the electricity benefit. This unit is rated at $166/yr verses a strictly electric heater at approximately $555/yr. Initially installed, I did set it on the electric mode. This heated the 50 gallons in approximately 1 hour. I see no downside in this unit: whether installation or use. Additionally, one will see a payback within three years for the savings on one's utility bill, when compared to a standard electric heater. I believe there is also a $300 federal rebate, if purchased by 12/31/2016.

Easy return? Charge $443 to return. This is freight charge.

After reading the manual it looked very difficult to install even for my brother who has installed regular water heaters a lot. Called to return since it looked like we might have to spend a lot more money to create a drain and buy essentials in the manual that they did not tell you you needed. Went to call to return and they had to get a price for the freight charge to return. $443 freight and straps for the truck. We then looked online and "This Old House" had a video with fairly uncomplicated instructions and you did not need all the extras they mentioned in the manual. Keeping it and going ahead with installation. I hope to return with a better review. By the way you need a drain in your garage or basement also. They didn't say that when buying it.

Warranty replacement

My AO Smith Hybrid water heater's compressor quit. Called AO Smith and they gave me a return authorization number and then I called Supply House and they got the replacement water heater shipped quickly.

Heat Pump Failed in less than 4 Months

Water heater throws 'ECC' code every so often and heat pump has failed. Heat pump continuously runs but clearly the electric portion of the heating is the only thing functioning. AO Smith tech support is very challenging to work with (this is not a review of Supplyhouse). Wants me to pay a plumber to remove/return to original facility in order to honor warranty. Stay away from this water heater.

Hybrid Water Heaters

I have had two A O Smith hybrid water heaters fail, but A O Smith has stood up to their warranty, so I am giving them another chance. Hopefully, the third time will be the charm. Price and delivery service from SupplyHouse.com was excellent!

One of the best on the market.

Have been plumbing for almost 15 years now and hands down would recommend this heater over any other. Heaters are not made the way they used to be. Swap this heater since my original heater installed in 1989 finally went out, went with it because I've received the least call backs for manufacturer defects then any other one I've installed except code readings when people don't do the maintenance I recommend like draining it a few times a year, and flushing the condensate drain. Saves you a lot of money over time plus cools down my garage a lot especially with an insulated garage door, was 104 degrees outside and 85 in the garage which is still a little warm but it helps remove the humidity, love it will recommend it to every customer looking for a heater

Great Service from Manufacturer & Supply House

This was a warranty replacement. The old heater is 6 years old. Operated w/o any issues until it didn't. The HVAC part of it died. No issues speaking with AO Smith. But it was replaced with exact same equipment. Even though the first one operated as intended, it was not to my liking. I actually wanted to replace the bad heater with an electric heater. The warranty would not cover that exchange, even though it was half the price of this Hybrid heater. AO Smith was quick in their accomodations. They did not even require me to return the old heater. That saved me a couple of hundred dollars, I'm sure. So I am installing the new heater and will use till it dies. BTW...the reason I rather go back to electric heater is because I could not tell the Hybrid saved any electricity; the recovery time after showers, while operating in Hybrid mode, was too long, and water temp needed to be set high enough to assure hot water in the duration of hot water use. Maybe the system needs tweaking or more engineering. Difficult to rate the heater because I believe it operated a s intended. It was just not to my preferences. I neither recommend nor discourage the purchase of this heater.

Yes, I would buy this product again

My new A.O. Smith heat pump hot water heater that I purchased thru Supply House is operating just like it is supposed to. I have it in the efficiency mode and the heat pump is providing my house with plenty of hot water without using the electric heating elements, this will lower my electric energy usage which in turn lower electric bills. Thanks Supply House for the great delivery service,

Super efficient

Unit uses about 1.6 amps average In efficiency mode Takes about 2hrs to refill a shower. Vs electric water heater 30 amps for 30-40 minutes to refill. You do the math. Put in large space , puts out alot of cooling and dehumidification. The math- 1.6amp x2hrs vs 20 amps x 30min Don't forget to factor In the winter it steals your heat, so if you have a high eff home heating system you will benefit greatly.. summertime benefits are awsome though. And for those that like set backs... " this is a heat pump" do some research folks, you don't set back heat pumps for your house, it doesn't help, same with a hp water heater. Heat loss 1/2 deg per hr avg with tank, water heaters don't work like your home, they operate on a temp swing, set 130deg. Off at 130deg, on at 120deg or 115deg. So a 2-3deg setback does 0 for you. We keep a fairly accurate unspoken shower scheduale in the house of 4 ( 2 girls), rarely run out in eff mode. If you start to run out, put it in hybrid mode for your family. If the hp fails, put it in electric mode. Bottom line - don't buy this and put it in a closet with no airflow or air ducts.

Great Product, fair price

My son installed the water heater in a few hours and not a lot of hardware. The unit started heating water immediately and cooled our Florida garage quickly. We have not received an electric bill yet but expect impressive energy savings

Q: My water has a sulfuric smell. When I install a new WH, I want to use either an alumin anode or a powered anode. Can I install either of those on this unit? If so, what is the correct part number? Thanks!

Hello, For a sulfuric smell, it is recommended that you install an aluminum anode rod, and for your model, it would be this one: https://www.supplyhouse.com/AO-Smith-100110627-3-4-Flexible-Plug-Anode-Rod-Aluminum

Q: Does it need 3 ft of clearance all around, including clearance from the closest wall? User Manual says this: "NOTICE: This Heat Pump Water Heater may be located within a required minimum of 6" clearance from a wall on the outlet side, however for future service considerations, a minimum of 3 feet from any obstruction on on the back, left and right side is recommended."

The clearance of 3 feet is not required but it is recommended by the manufacturer in case of the unit ever needing servicing. Having extra space can make it easier for a technician to work on it and get to certain spots and parts of the unit. Not having that clearance could make it quite difficult to service and thus create an issue.
