Description

Honeywell LineVoltPro Digital 7-Day Programmable Electric Heat Thermostat, TL8230A1003

The Honeywell TL8230A1003 LineVoltPro 8000 thermostat delivers precision temperature control for 208V and 240V electric baseboard heaters, radiant ceiling heat, convectors, and fan-forced heaters. This programmable line voltage thermostat features 7-day scheduling that helps reduce annual heating costs by up to 10 percent when used as directed. Designed for residential and light commercial electric heating applications, it combines electronic accuracy within plus or minus 1 degree Fahrenheit with a user-friendly digital interface. The double-pole (DPST) design provides safe, complete circuit isolation for line voltage electric heating systems.

Key Features & Benefits
  • 7-Day Programming: Set unique temperature schedules for each day of the week with four programmable time periods daily, allowing you to heat only when and where you need it for maximum energy savings.
  • Electronic Temperature Control: Maintains accuracy within plus or minus 1 degree Fahrenheit, eliminating the temperature swings common with mechanical thermostats and keeping your space consistently comfortable.
  • On-Demand Backlight Display: Large, clear digital screen lights up when you press a button, making it easy to read in any lighting condition from dim hallways to bright rooms.
  • Early Start Function: Calculates when to activate heating so your programmed temperature is reached exactly when scheduled, ensuring comfort the moment you need it.
  • Soundproofed Operation: Reduces the clicking noise commonly heard with conventional line voltage thermostats, providing quieter operation in bedrooms and living spaces.
  • Heating Indicator Light: At-a-glance confirmation shows when the heating system is actively running, so you always know your system status.
  • On/Off Switch: Built-in switch lets you turn the thermostat completely off at the end of the heating season, preventing accidental activation during warmer months.
  • Double Pole Design: DPST switch configuration breaks both hot legs of 208V or 240V circuits for complete electrical isolation and enhanced safety.

Compatibility & Requirements

The TL8230A1003 is designed for line voltage electric heating systems operating at 208V or 240V AC, 50/60 Hz. It controls resistive-rated electric baseboard heaters, radiant ceiling heating panels, convectors, and fan-forced heaters. The thermostat is rated for 15 amps at 208V (3120 watts) or 15 amps at 240V (3600 watts). It requires hardwired installation and mounts vertically on a standard electrical box. The unit uses 5.5-inch tinned copper leadwires for connection and does not require batteries.

Installation & Care

The thermostat mounts vertically in a standard electrical box using the included hardware. Installation requires connecting the line voltage power supply wires to the line terminals and the heating load wires to the load terminals, following the double-pole wiring configuration shown in the installation instructions. The unit measures 4 7/8 inches high by 2 3/4 inches wide by 7/8 inch deep. Consult the installation manual for detailed wiring diagrams and safety precautions before beginning installation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can this thermostat be programmed separately for each day of the week?

A: Yes, the TL8230A1003 offers true 7-day programming, allowing you to set a unique schedule for each individual day. Unlike 5-2 day programmable models, this thermostat lets you program Saturday differently from Sunday or any weekday differently from another. Each day supports up to four separate time periods with different temperature setpoints.

Q: Does this thermostat need batteries?

A: No, the TL8230A1003 is hardwired directly to your line voltage electric heating system and does not require batteries. It draws power from the 208V or 240V electrical circuit, so it remains operational as long as the circuit breaker is on.

Good product with some limitations

This is a good product. Certainly the most appealing in the very small world of programable line voltage thermostats. It looks great, it's easy to use and it works fine. I am using it with radiant ceiling pannels in some bedrooms. As such I want heat in the evening and during the night, but not during the day. The programing of the times is very flexible. However, unlike most other programable thermostats that I have used, this one does not allow setting whatever temperature for each time slot. Instead you select 3 temperatures (vacation, at home, and away, or whatever the exact terms were)and then in each time slot you are limited to selecting one of those 3 temperatures. This might be fine for most people but can be a limiting factor for others. Also, the switching is mechanical (relay?) and I can hear it if I'm awake. It's about as noticeable as with the old mechanical thermostat that it replaced, so not a problem for the average sleeper altogether a good product that could be great if it allowed the same flexibility as most other programable thermostats. The purchasing experience from PexSupply was flawless. Great job guys!

Quality product but limited settings

I ordered 5 of these for a house I just purchased. The house has electric hydronic heat. The units appear to be good quality and are very accurate in holding the right temperature in the rooms. The one major flaw with these units is that they only allow for 2 temperate settings; Day and Night. You can have 4 schedules through out the day but all 4 need to be set at one of the 2 pre-set temps. For example, you can have Day = 68 and Night = 62, but is want it at 68 when you wake, 65 during the day, and then 62 when you sleep - you can't do this. You're stuck choosing between 62 or 68. I'm still recommending these because of their quality and accuracy but I'm only giving 3 stars because of the limitations with the scheduling.

Quality products and exceptional customer service.

I ordered two four wire programmable thermostats. These thermostats were unavailable at local hardware stores.Supply house promptly delivered the thermostats. However, one of the thermostats did not work, prompting a call to customer service. Customer service patiently and professionally arranged the shipment of a new thermostat.I later discovered that the original thermostat was not defected, but installed incorrectly.Thank you Supply House for the prompt delivery of a quality product and exceptional customer service.

Works as Advertised

Product works perfectly. Didn't give it 5 stars because I had to search for an installation video on YouTube and they didn't provide instructions on how to reset the default temps it came with. I had to figure that out on my own after a frustrating hour playing with it.

Makes a buzzing or humming sound when off

This seems to work ok, but it makes a buzzing or humming sound when it is turned off. It doesn't make the sound all the time, but enough to be annoying. Maybe it wouldn't bother some people. I saw another reviewer said this is a characteristic of the DPST design.

Highly Recommended

This unit replaced a new install of a Cadet Line Voltage thermostat. The Honeywell unit is a lot more user friendly than the Cadet thermostat. It is an easy installation. After reading instructions the user interface is very clear. Functions very well. It also looks nice on the wall.

"Does the light display turn off until you want to adjust it, or is the light always on." The light goes on only when you operate the controls, and stays on only briefly after that.

There is a button to turn the light on. Then the light is on for about 10 seconds and then it goes off automatically. Then it is off. Easy to read during the day or when the room is lit up and the back light is great for when the room is dark.

Q: I bought this thermostat to control 120 V baseboard heaters. When I connect it up as per the installation instructions. everything seems to work but the heater does not receive any power. I have verified with a volt meter that I do not get any voltage across the load terminals, even though I here the relay switching. Do I have a defective unit or am I using it in an incorrect application?

If your display is working - temp settings, and programable displays - I would venture to bet you got a bad one, if your display is not showing swap the wiring around ... mine has been bullet proof, since I got it.  If you have any questions I called Pex on another topic and they were great with assistance. Sorry I could not be more help!

Was this review helpful to you?
- Another PexSupply Customer

Not sure what you're doing but if you mis-connect the wires on the thermostat you will "toast" it immediately.

Was this review helpful to you?
- Another PexSupply Customer

The application is correct and most likely the thermostat is not defective. As simple as this may seem, you probably have the Line and Load wires connected incorrectly. Look at the wiring diagram and follow it carefully. At first glance you think it connects a certain way, but in reality it does so differently. I know --- I made the same mistake the first unit I installed.
