A standard, off the shelf thermopile converts heat energy from the pilot flame into electrical energy to operate the gas valve and microprocessor. No need for external electricity.

I would not buy this HWH from Supply House again.
The unit arrived without a blemish on the box, so I did not open it as instructed. When the plumber arrived later to install it, he was floored at what he found. On the perimeter top of the tank, there was a "crushed" area 5 to 7 inches long. He was so alarmed, he immediately ran an air pressure test finding it would not hold pressure. That started a Supply House Saga (ask to see the communication thread between J.W. Wooten and the various "customer service" individuals over August, Sept and October of 2024). After boxing the damaged HWH myself, and strapping it on a pallet (I had to purchase, as well as the straps) they sent a carrier to pick up, credited my account (no refund possible) and said it would be 30 days till arrival. It was 60 days and the unit......believe it or not, was damaged in the same location, not as severely, yet the BOX HAD NO INDICATION OF THE DAMAGE INSIDE. My plumber, John Whatley, owner of Johnny Pipes Plumbing, Austin and Round Rock, Texas, will testify. There is a "handling" problem at Bradford White, damaging HWH's and no one is catching it or.....they are being damaged and boxed anyway.
Never been treated by a commercial supply house this way. When the second damaged tank arrived, I asked (in the presence of the Old Dominion Driver) the young lady at customer service for a refund so I could go elsewhere and purchase one, she asked me to have the driver WAIT while she communicated up the ladder to determine if she could do that. He had a route to continue !!! She ultimately couldn't do that so I accepted the tank wondering if the damage might be severe enough to cause a leak. This is synoptic. Needless to say I won't ever call Supply House again nor purchase a Bradford White HWH.......neither will my plumber.
