A standard, off the shelf thermopile converts heat energy from the pilot flame into electrical energy to operate the gas valve and microprocessor. No need for external electricity.

Good so far, but expected more
Bought Bradford white water heater.
Supposedly the best on the market.
Control is Honeywell which is good.
Drain valve is metallic, not plastic like other cheap ones.
It has the option if TP relief valve to be on the top. This was key for me to reduce connections when replacing previous water heater (AOSmith) that had the TP on the top.
However, the AOSmith looked better in the control, metallic not plastic like BW. Also, the water connections and the exhaust on the top of the AOSmith wh are protected: in case of water leakage on the top, the water doesn't enter to the body of the wh.
In the case of BW, these three points are not protected, so when I had a water leakage during installation, a small one that I didn't realiza was there, the water just went inside the body of the wh, in the area filled with glass wool... This points should be protected in the top!
Despite of this, hope this BW lasts at least the 10 years that I bought the warranty...
Supply house service was very good during the purchasing. Delivery, shipping, packaging also good.
